Internship | Numerical study of a novel superconducting shielding design

About this position

In the ESP department, a broad range of subjects are studied, from electromagnetic signatures of military systems to novel sensing concepts with application in the defense domain. This internship will focus on investigating the electromagnetic properties of a prototype superconducting shield design via numerical simulation. Superconductors are materials which have zero electrical resistance at finite temperature. They are interesting as shields since they expel magnetic fields in a phenomenon known as the Meissner effect. They can be broadly categorized as metallic/low-temperature and ceramic/high-temperature.

What will be your role?

You will be developing and validating a numerical solver which simulates the electromagnetic behavior of superconducting materials in different settings. The work will progress in tandem with experimental efforts which serve to cross-validate the numerics. In turn, the numerical results will be used to guide design of further iterations in a short-cyclic feedback loop. Your results might therefore lead to direct real-life implementation.
You will be working in a team of diverse backgrounds, from physics and mathematics to material sciences and precision-instrument manufacturers.

What we expect from you

We expect you to be able to work in a dynamic setting and have the ability to pivot quickly during the course of your research. Working in a team requires communication and regular progress updates - knowing when to hunker down and solve an issue... and knowing when to ask for help!
A solid mathematics/physics background is a must. Experience with simulation tools and numerical methods are a big benefit.

What you'll get in return

  • A highly professional, innovative internship environment, within a team of top experts.
  • A suitable internship allowance (615 euro for wo-, hbo- and mbo-students, for a full-time internship).
  • Possibility of eight hours of free leave per internship month (for a full-time internship).
  • Use of a laptop.
  • An allowance for travel expenses in case you don’t receive an OV-card.
