Job Summary

Effectively interacts with other internal and external teams, including the design engineering, regional/site critical facilities engineering teams, onsite support vendors and consultants on projects, and policies/procedures to resolve complex matters.

Responsibilities

Technical Expertise

  • Thorough understanding of advanced electrical, fire protection, and HVAC systems operation, including advanced optimization strategies and deficiencies
  • Expert controls system knowledge sufficient to rapidly comprehend new systems
  • Expert operating knowledge of control systems, including advanced diagnostics and repairs
  • Ability to apply knowledge of Equinix process and procedure and industry standards to resolve complex issues
  • Acts as a subject matter expert to others inside and outside of the group
  • Extensive knowledge of multiple facets of controls engineering
  • Develops and executes projects and is responsible for the delivery of projects across multiple functional groups
  • Maps infrastructure objects into the Equinix Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM) system for monitoring using BACnet, Modbus, OPC, and other industry standard communications protocols
  • Works with local and regional critical facilities engineering staff, equipment vendors, and software development team to coordinate DCIM monitoring of site infrastructure
  • Identifies and/or develops solutions for integrating infrastructure monitoring systems into DCIM where required
  • Assures adherence to developed standards as DCIM systems are deployed
  • Troubleshoots all elements of the controls system, including field devices, controllers, network components, and software systems
  • Assists on-site IBX Critical Facilities Engineering personnel in working with local controls vendors

  • Contributes to mentoring junior team members
  • Directs internal and external project team members

Develop Policy/Methods

  • Participates in review of and contributes to development of policy and procedure documents

Qualifications

  • Proven years of experience in a critical facility environment preferred, including operations and design, with emphasis and special focus on controls and DCIM
  • Strong knowledge of BACnet, Modbus, and OPC communications protocols, including protocol definition, implementation strategies, and troubleshooting
  • Experience with one or more brands of control systems, such as Aveva, Siemens, Automated Logic Corporation (ALC), Johnson Controls, Rockwell Controllogix, Metasys, Honeywell, Schneider Electric, Delta Controls, Delta-V, or Andover
  • Able to program and troubleshoot Direct Digital Control (DDC) systems, Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC), and/or Distributed Control Systems (DCS)
  • Able to understand control strategies and architecture using Sequence of Operation and P&ID drawings
