We are currently looking for a System Engineer to join the team in Delft.

As a System Engineer, you will play a key role in the technical management and development of innovative laser communication products and submodules, contributing to optical communications in the space industry. You will be involved throughout the entire product lifecycle — from design and prototyping to testing, validation, and preparing for high-volume production — ensuring seamless integration across mechanics, electronics, and software.

Main responsibilities

  • Manage the technical aspects of one or more products or submodules, often in collaboration with a system architect.

  • Ensure coherence between system requirements, design concepts, and integration of all subsystems.

  • Support project managers in acquisition activities and in transferring project results to customers.

  • Contribute to all the development stages: system design, test setups, and production processes for volume manufacturing. After the realization, you are also responsible for the validation of the solution.

  • Maintain the technical baseline of designs, including documentation, requirements, interface management, and technical budgets.

  • Act as the link between multidisciplinary teams (mechanics, electronics, software) to deliver integrated solutions.

Requirements

  • BSc, MSc, or PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Electronics, Physics, Mechatronics, or Robotics.

  • At least 4 years of experience as a System Engineer.

  • Proven experience with optical systems, precision opto-mechanics, and/or high-tech systems.

  • Experience in the space industry and/or optical communication is a strong plus.

  • Strong skills in maintaining technical documentation, requirements, interfaces, and budgets.

  • Enthusiastic, flexible, and proactive, with a hands-on approach and perseverance.

  • Excellent command of English (written and spoken); Dutch is a plus but not required.

  • A solution-oriented team player who takes responsibility inside and outside of projects.

  • Entrepreneurial and creative, able to identify technical challenges and translate them into practical solutions.

  • Pragmatic and capable of working independently, with initiative to contribute to the company’s growth.

Our story

At S[&T] we contribute to a safer life on earth by translating space data into valuable and actionable insights. We oversee data from instruments to application, and apply our expertise within our software frameworks, information products and consultancy.

Our society relies on space and scientific instruments for climate change monitoring, navigation, defence and national security, and other crucial services we all use in our daily lives. These instruments produce an enormous quantity of complex data, and our goal is to unlock its value.

We have more than 20 years of experience working on instrument calibration, the creation of data quality monitoring tools, the development of real-time data processing frameworks, and the development of application-specific algorithms. With this, we help organisations, governments and industries to strengthen their information position and thereby improve their decision making. We focus on the following domains: Space & Science, Defence & Security, Environment & Sustainability, and High-Tech Consulting.
