Internship Opportunity: Modeling and Analysis of Analog Signal Conditioning Circuits in Optical Measurement Systems

Be part of progress

Assignment Overview

In this assignment, you will work on the modeling and analysis of analog signal conditioning analog frontend and driver circuits currently used in an optical measurement system. A key part of the project will be the mathematical modeling and performance analysis of these circuits using Mathcad and MATLAB, enabling a deeper understanding of circuit behavior for further improvements and redesign.

This is a bachelor/master graduation project (thesis) or master internship (to gain work experience), with a duration of at least 5-6 months. The start date is as soon as possible, but flexible.

Your Profile

  • Background in electrical engineering or applied physics or a related course (Bachelor’s or Master’s level)
  • Familiarity with analog electronics and basic circuit theory
  • Experience with modeling tools such as Mathcad and MATLAB
  • Enthusiasm for hands-on experimentation and problem-solving in a lab setting

Key Responsibilities

  • Study and analyze requirements for the circuits’ signal conditioning such as amplification, noise, stability, and filtering
  • Use Mathcad to model the fundamental circuit behaviors analytically, including:
    • Frequency responses and transfer functions
    • Noise analysis and SNR calculations
    • Stability and signal balancing
  • Analyze measurement data via MATLAB to validate the Mathcad models, for example, verifying if the noise models match reality
  • Document findings and present results to the engineering team

Learning Objectives

  • Gain deeper insights into analog frontend circuit modeling
  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of amplifier noise and stability analysis
  • Gain hands-on experience with analog circuit design and noise quantification
  • Understand practical challenges in noise reduction and gain experience with analog frontend and laser driver designs
  • Opportunity to improve theoretical modeling with hands-on analog design, preparing for advanced roles in analog and mixed-signal engineering

Other Requirements

  • You are enrolled at an educational institute for the entire duration of the internship
  • If you are a non-EU citizen studying in the Netherlands, your university must be willing to sign the documents relevant for doing an internship (i.e., Nuffic agreement)
  • You need to be located in the Netherlands to perform your internship. If you are currently living or studying outside of the Netherlands, your CV/motivation letter should include your willingness to relocate
