At iwell, we are all about reinforcing energy security. We help European businesses become more energy independent. With growing regulations, extreme price volatility and rising grid issues, businesses need to be resilient. We deliver energy management solutions that ensure businesses are always in control of their energy. Our in-house developed EMS and modular battery storage drive profit through sustainability, making businesses future-proof. We’re a fast-growing international team of bold, talented individuals. From engineers and software developers to creative thinkers and customer-focused business developers, we are looking for people who are determined to make a positive impact.

The Role

As a Machine Learning Scientist at iwell, you will focus on developing forecasting models that power our smart energy management solutions. You’ll join our Data Team where you’ll work together with Data Engineers and Machine Learning Engineers to deliver accurate forecasts to our optimisation and monitoring systems. Your work will involve researching new approaches, testing model performance, and deploying innovative forecasting methods into production. You’ll also play a key role in monitoring model performance over time, detecting drift, and ensuring long-term reliability of deployed models. Success in this role means combining curiosity with rigor: you thrive on experimentation, but you also ensure your solutions are robust, scalable, and practical. Collaboration is key; you’ll work cross-functionally, sharing insights and aligning your models with the broader product and development goals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and validate machine learning models for forecasting energy-related data.
  • Explore and test new modelling techniques to improve forecasting accuracy and reliability.
  • Continuously evaluate model performance, detect drift, and iterate to deliver robust results.
  • Collaborate with Data Engineers and Machine Learning Engineers to create high-quality datasets and deploy models in a production environment.
  • Provide clear documentation of models and share insights to strengthen iwell’s collective expertise in data and machine learning.

What you will bring

  • At least 3+ years of experience in developing and validating machine learning models, ideally in a production environment.
  • A strong background in a quantitative field such as computer science, physics, mathematics, econometrics, or related areas.
  • Excellent programming skills in Python, including familiarity with ML frameworks.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Passion for sustainability and/or energy solutions.
  • Enjoy working in a dynamic scale-up environment.

We care

  • Accelerate your career: Get a budget of €1500 a calendar year for personal development and career growth.
  • Pension: Attractive pension plan with BrandNewDay.
  • Travel reimbursement: We cover your travel costs (bike, car, or public transport).
  • Mobile phone allowance: €25 per month.
  • 30 days of holiday to rest and recharge, plus a yearly company holiday, plus one volunteer day a year.
  • Hybrid role: Balance between our Utrecht office and working from home.
