Job description
As an R&D engineer, you will work on projects related to surface treatments and conduct research on new aerospace materials in relation to their operational environment. Key areas of focus include the properties, degradation (incl. corrosion), and lifespan of materials such as nickel superalloys and ceramic matrix composites, as well as the behaviour of coatings, materials in new propulsion systems and energy sources, and other material systems. You will use your knowledge to set up materials research for Defense, the aerospace industry, and (inter)national high-tech companies. In doing so, you closely collaborate with colleagues from other disciplines within NLR. Your work involves addressing questions related to the performance of materials and their mechanical & chemical properties, and you develop knowledge in the field of new metal alloys and the setup of qualification and certification processes. Your innovative ideas align with socially relevant themes such as sustainable, circular, and environmentally friendly material use.
