Internship Data Science - Profiling customer workflows

Company: Canon Production Printing

Introduction
Canon Production Printing (CPP) sells cut sheet printing presses, such as the varioPRINT iX-series, to customers who typically use these printers in print shops where they produce professional-grade products in high volume.

While all customers aim to optimize printing time and printer efficiency, they may employ different workflows to achieve these results. The workflows are characterized by, for example, the types of jobs that are printed, the printed volume, the submission methods that are used, the time a job spends in the system and the amount of manual processing that takes place.

From the printers in the field CPP receives detailed information derived from the workflows that its customers use. If we assume that an individual printer is used mainly within a single customer workflow, we can use the data that we receive to classify each printer and attach workflow profile to it. This classification will greatly help CPP relate printer behavior or customer issues to its usage. It will inform future development by providing a better understanding of the setting in which a printer is used.

Objective
The primary goal is to develop a classification model that determines workflow types based on field data. This model can then be used to assign a profile to each printer. Additionally, we want to determine the factors that are most important in identifying the workflow profile.

Expectations

  • Assess data quality and interpret and transform the raw data
  • Extract features from the data
  • Use the data to train and validate a model
  • Create a report explaining the methodology, findings, and conclusions
  • Make recommendations for data improvement and future research.

Challenges

  • Combining data from different sometimes loosely linked source tables.
  • Cleaning and transforming the raw data to distil the relevant aspects
  • Data exploration and determining the relevant features.
