Internship- Process Characteristics Interaction in production lines with Artificial Neural Networks

Internship description:

Do you want to work with AI in production lines? Then this is your opportunity to join our development department where new methods are developed to improve the production of our Personal Health devices (e.g. the power toothbrush).

Traditional methods of assembling complex products face many challenges because they depend on fixed operations and the expertise of technical staff. Due to the complexity of the assembly process, interactions between processes may not be directly visible, and therefore difficult to detect. This creates a need for advanced analysis methods. Undetected interactions may lead to inefficiencies and errors, which negatively impact the final product’s quality. Therefore, investigating these complex interactions is crucial for optimizing production lines and ensuring high-quality outputs.

Relevance

Investigating the interaction between assembly processes in a production line helps identify bottlenecks and areas that can slow down production. Understanding these interactions can ensure better control and understanding of the system behavior, and overall improved efficiency in the assembly process. Due to the complexity of the application, artificial neural networks (ANNs) represent a good way to extract explainable interactions, combined data handling methodologies, interpretable figures, and model training frameworks.

What will you be doing?

  • Perform scientific research on the topics of feature interaction with ANNs, data handling, interpretable figures, and model training frameworks;
  • Process production data in most suitable format according to requirements;
  • Investigate relationships and transfer functions between process characteristics;
  • Find the most prominent interactions between process characteristics and investigate their influence on the output;
  • Create and test ANNs to predict drivetrain characteristics;
  • Detailed technical report.

What do you bring?

  • Bachelor or Master student in Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Computer Science, Industrial Engineering or related study;
  • Experience with the Python programming language and with libraries such as scikit-learn, scipy etc
  • Strong analytical, research, and problem solving skills, and the ability to make a problem abstract
  • Strong drive and passion for the topic, and ability to interact and communicate in an interdisciplinary environment

How we work together
We believe that we are better together than apart. For our office-based teams, this means working in-person at least 3 days per week.

  • Monthly full-time allowance between €500 - €700 gross, depending on educational level. If you will perform a part-time internship you will receive the allowance pro-rata.
  • Housing compensation, in case of relocating to the vicinity of the office, €300 net if location is in the vicinity of Amsterdam, €255 net for all other Philips locations. You need to provide a rental contract of the landlord, and your normal home-work travel distance need to be more than 50 km or travel time (one way trip) need to be more than 1.5 hours.
  • Travel compensation, if you are not eligible for a free public transport card; you will receive max. €192 net
  • Paid holidays per internship term.
  • The opportunity to buy Philips equipment at our Philips shop
