How do you make our customers happy?

By ensuring the data that powers our warehouse operations flows as reliably as the Dutch rivers. As a team WADA (Warehouse Data Availability) Data Engineer, you’ll design and maintain near real-time pipelines, processing thousands of records per minute across five warehouses. When warehouse managers need to optimize operations, finance needs accurate statements, or customer service needs order insights, they count on your data infrastructure to deliver. Not least, 13.7 million customers and 47,000 partners depend on smooth logistics pipelines for timely order fulfillments. Ready to be the data backbone of this entire operation?

The biggest challenge

Building a data infrastructure that facilitates everyone without it becoming a tangled mess. You’ll face a diverse stakeholder landscape—from warehouse operators needing real-time dashboards to finance teams requiring perfect accuracy. Meanwhile, you’re navigating a complex IT ecosystem where data resides in dozens of different systems. How do you create a platform flexible enough to quickly integrate new sources yet robust enough to never miss a beat? Success means balancing speed with reliability, flexibility with governance, and innovation with stability. Can you envision and implement solutions that scale gracefully while keeping our “build IT, run IT, love IT” principle alive?

What you'll do as a Java Engineer in Data

As the senior Java expert on our team of 4 (including 2 other or 3 other BI/data engineers and a product manager), you’ll be the technical cornerstone of our data infrastructure. You’ll enhance our current Java-based Dataflow pipelines while developing the next generation of our data platform. Working with Google Dataflow (Apache Beam), Apache Airflow, BigQuery, Postgres, and DBT, you’ll ensure a seamless data flow from the warehouse floor to the executive dashboard.

As mentioned, your mission extends beyond maintaining systems: you’ll also co-design a scalable platform that can quickly unlock new data sources and deliver them in a unified, reliable format. As our Java authority, you’ll elevate the team’s technical capabilities through mentoring and best practices. In our DevOps culture, you’ll own your solutions end-to-end, including participating in the on-call rotation (one week per month). You’ll split your time between our Utrecht HQ, several Waalwijk warehouses (one day every month), and home, getting hands-on with the operations your data serves. This proximity to the business keeps you grounded in what really matters: reliable, timely data delivery.

Key responsibilities:

  • Enhance the usage, scalability, and performance of warehousing Java Dataflow pipelines
  • Design and implement a new data platform for rapid source integration
  • Establish and promote coding best practices across the team
  • Mentor team members in Java and data engineering excellence
  • Own your solutions through our "You Build It, You Run It, You Love It" philosophy
  • Participate in on-call rotation, ensuring 24/7 data availability and reliability
  • Bridge technical implementation with business value delivery

Why you can make a difference

You combine deep Java expertise with a passion for scalable data solutions. As an experienced data engineer, you’ve built systems that work at scale, under pressure, and evolve gracefully. Your technical prowess in Java and modern data stacks (especially Google Cloud) is matched by your ability to mentor others and think strategically about platform challenges. You understand that in logistics, delayed data equals delayed decisions, which equals delayed packages. Most importantly, you’re ready to GROW our platform capabilities, OBSESS over data reliability, and WIN by turning warehouse data availability into a competitive advantage.

  • - Conference-driven developer You love reading about the latest data tools but never get around to testing and adopting them
  • - Hand-off hero Production issues? On-call duties? There’s nothing you can’t ‘delegate’!
  • - Stakeholder dodgeballer You'd rather hide behind your monitor than understand how the business actually uses your data
  • + Data platform visionary You see beyond individual pipelines and design scalable platforms that unlock value across the organization
  • + Java mentor extraordinaire You're excited to be the senior Java voice, elevating the team through code reviews, pair programming, and technical leadership
  • + Reliability champion You sleep soundly, knowing your pipelines process millions of records flawlessly and wake up invigorated and ready to make them even better

Where you'll work

You’ll join team WADA (Warehouse Data Availability), a tight-knit group that forms the data bridge between our warehouses, bol’s data landscape, and our logistics partners. We’re small but mighty, working independently with mature agile practices and full ownership of our tech stack. The culture combines technical excellence with business impact—we geek out over Apache Beam optimizations but never forget that real packages need to reach real customers. With 2,900 colleagues supporting 13.7 million customers and 47,000 partners, your pipelines inform decisions and drive actions across our entire logistics network. The environment is collaborative and transparent: we share knowledge freely, support each other during on-call weeks, and aren’t afraid to experiment with new technologies. Ready to ensure our data flows as smoothly as our packages? Show us how you’ll make every byte count!
