Job description
This PhD position is part of the Dutch Aviation Systems Analysis Lab (DASAL project, a flagship collaboration between TU Delft and Royal NLR, funded through the Dutch national growth fund under the ‘Luchtvaart in Transitie’ programme. DASAL serves as a living lab for developing integrated models and simulations to support innovation throughout the Dutch aviation sector and public policy. Within this unique ecosystem, you will join a diverse and interdisciplinary team of PhD candidates and postdocs from across the Faculty of Aerospace Engineering, collaborating closely with experts at NLR and the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management to analyse the complex interactions between sustainability, economics, and societal impact in aviation.
Whereas current aircraft noise prediction models used for monitoring and legislation, i.e., the Dutch noise calculation model and ECAC Doc.29, are fast and relatively accurate regarding predictions of overall sound level, these models do not provide information to allow for estimating the psychoacoustic annoyance metrics (i.e. the spectral and temporal components of the sound). In addition, new configurations such as the BWB or new engine technologies cannot be accounted for.
To tackle these limitations, aircraft source noise models on a component level are needed. These models need to be modular and, as such, be able to account for introducing new aircraft components. The literature describes the first versions of such models, but some of them stem from the 1970s and are, therefore, relatively outdated. Within DASAL, an enhanced version of these models will be realized, based on theoretical considerations, measurements, and literature findings. These models also provide the spectral content (so not only the overall sound pressure level) and, as such, can be used for auralization (making synthetic sound predictions audible) and subsequent noise annoyance studies.
In addition to the source noise modelling, ensuring accurate input to the model is essential for accurate noise predictions. This input concerns, for example, engine thrust. Within this task, employing the most recent insights for thrust estimation, for example, using GSP (Gas turbine Simulation Program) or databases derived from GSP, analysis of fan tone frequency, or gathering data from manufacturers/operators is also an important element.

Faculty Aerospace Engineering

Conditions of employment
Doctoral candidates will be offered a 4-year period of employment in principle, but in the form of 2 employment contracts. An initial 1,5 year contract with an official go/no go progress assessment within 15 months. Followed by an additional contract for the remaining 2,5 years assuming everything goes well and performance requirements are met.
Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, increasing from € 2901 per month in the first year to € 3707 in the fourth year. As a PhD candidate you will be enrolled in the TU Delft Graduate School. The TU Delft Graduate School provides an inspiring research environment with an excellent team of supervisors, academic staff and a mentor. The Doctoral Education Programme is aimed at developing your transferable, discipline-related and research skills.
