Make your mark on our time as a Consultant at TNO in The Hague!

Introduction
Radar systems offer a vital contribution to understanding what is happening around us. Whether naval vessels, military drones, self-driving vehicles or satellites, radars provide a reliable picture of the environment, day and night and in all weather conditions.TNO is helping the Dutch Ministry of Defence to develop and select radar systems that are indispensable for carrying out the MoD’s core mission, now and in the future. Of course, we are working on this together with renowned research institutes in the Netherlands and beyond, and with the national and international radar industry. In the field of radar technology, TNO is a leading European R&D partner, with a broad and state-of-the-art knowledge base ranging from complete system concepts and architectures for numerous applications to the smallest details of integrated microwave circuits, antennas, and signal processing.Every working day is different, but one thing is certain: as a Radar Technology consultant, you are in constant contact with the MoD, industrial parties, other knowledge institutions, and, of course, the experts at TNO. You will translate our innovative radar capabilities to the needs in the operational context of our clients. In this way, you will make a significant contribution to accelerating the impact of our innovations.

What will you be doing?
Together with colleagues, you will work on innovative radar system concepts that provide information superiority to the end user both in the short and long term. In doing so, you will take into account the needs of our clients, technological trends, and the constant evolution of threats. You’ll develop promising concepts together with industry partners. In doing so, you will build ecosystems that contribute to European strategic autonomy and a strong role for the Netherlands. You will oversee different fields at TNO such as military operations and C2, weapon systems, and electronic warfare, and link them to radar technology. This will support the MoD in making the right choices for radar systems as part of next generations of radar capabilities on land, at sea, in the air, and in space. At the same time, you’ll keep an eye on which integrated solutions are now ripe for further development into prototypes, so that they can be tested in our state-of-the-art measurement facilities and then further developed together with industry into fully-fledged capabilities that make a difference for the MoD. You’ll also advise other parties outside the defence domain, for example on formulating requirements for procuring new radar systems, or solving problems. In terms of content, you’ll stay abreast of what is going on, for example by attending national and international conferences, catching up with key figures and visiting a wide range of clients. In doing so, you contribute to the future resilience and strength of the armed forces and the security of the Netherlands in a rapidly changing world.

What we expect from you

You’re an analytical, organised team player who communicates easily with colleagues from different areas of expertise and backgrounds. You’ve mastered the basic theory of radar systems and want nothing more than to expand your knowledge in this field. You not only have an eye for the radar systems themselves, but also for the environment in which they operate, in the broadest sense of the word.
You have a clear affinity with defence and preferably knowledge of and/or experience with sensor systems used in this context, allowing you to make the connection between our technological innovations and the concrete needs of the MoD. In doing so, you ensure that our solutions add real value in operational practice. You’re creative in coming up with new concepts, and you know how to communicate and explain them clearly to colleagues and stakeholders. At the same time, you have a healthy dose of critical ability to determine what it takes to turn an idea into reality.Other knowledge and skills you bring:

  • An MSc and/or PhD in electrical engineering, (applied) physics, aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, or similar studies.
  • Preferably at least 3 years of work experience with a scientific or engineering background in one or more of these fields: sensor technology, (radar) signal processing, system performance analysis, integrated air and missile defence, ballistic missile defence, electronic warfare.
  • Practical knowledge of Python and/or MATLAB.
  • Excellent command of Dutch (at least B2) and English in speech and writing.
  • A willingness to work at least 3 days in the office (The Hague) to interact with the team.
