Bsc/Msc - Internship Material Science/Physics/Chemistry
Are you a student with a background in material science, physics, or chemistry looking for a challenging research assignment? Do you want to help us improve the reliability of our printers by understanding the effects of ink on different materials? We are looking for you!
Your Assignment
Within our printers, one of the risks is the highly interactive nature of the inks. For example, components that are glued together risk falling apart as a result of the ink dissolving the glue. For some component materials, this is not a direct contact with liquid ink (like in the print heads or ink tubes), but materials being exposed to very small droplets (‘ink mist’) during their lifetime. While we know this risk exists, it is very hard to do a representative test to investigate the lifetime of these parts, as we usually perform these tests with liquid ink.
To get representative results, we would like to know what the difference is between exposing a bit of glue to liquid ink versus ink mist, as it would be in the machine. With the knowledge of these differences, we could develop better tests or extrapolate our current knowledge better towards already performed tests.
You will conduct experiments to compare the effects of liquid ink and ink mist on various materials, analyze the interactions and degradation processes of materials exposed to ink mist versus liquid ink and develop improved testing methods or extrapolate current test results to better predict the lifetime of printer components.
