LO signal generation with very low phase-noise (PN) is of utterly importance in radar and communication systems. In radar applications, this improves the detection of a small, (relatively) slow-moving target via its doppler shift. VCOs having ultra-low phase noise are key components to enable this. Conventionally, a parallel LC-tank is used within a VCO, which has its limitations in minimizing phase-noise. Alternatively, using a series LC-tank presents a lower equivalent tank resistance, leading to a 20log(Qtank) improvement in phase-noise theoretically.
The objective of this internship is to investigate such series-LC tank based VCO, compare it with a parallel-LC tank VCO, and make a circuit implementation in a modern BiCMOS technology.
