Internship | Study of TIR instruments for gas detection

About this position

In this internship, you will be joining the Optical Designers team of the Optics department of TNO. We create breakthrough optical solutions for a healthier, safer, more sustainable and digital world, by developing high-performance optical systems for challenging applications and demanding environments, together with our partners. In this project we will focus on instruments to detect trace gases from Space, such as Ammonia, contributing to a healthier environment.

What will be your role?

In this project, you will be performing an optical design study on optical instruments for trace gas detection in the thermal infrared spectral range. Tasks will include comparing different concepts, making a trade-off to select a concept and optimizing that further, including any necessary performance analysis. There is also an optional possibility to perform experimental labwork next to the design tasks.
You will be joining the optical designers team, which places a high importance on the depth and breadth of knowledge of our team through extensive interaction between our 14 designers with differing levels of experience, and with adjacent engineering disciplines.

What we expect from you

  • Student pursing an MSc in Physics/Optics.
  • Knowledge of optical design and experience with design software such as OpticStudio, CodeV, or similar.
  • Good analytical skills.
  • Experience with experimental lab work.
  • Good teamworking skills, ability to adapt to different environments.

  • A suitable internship allowance (615 euro for wo-, hbo- and mbo-students, for a full-time internship).
  • Possibility of eight hours of free leave per internship month (for a full-time internship).
  • A free membership of Jong TNO, where you can meet other TNO professionals and join several activities, such as sports activities, (work-related) courses or the yearly ski-trip.
  • Use of a laptop.
  • An allowance for travel expenses in case you don’t receive an OV-card.
