About this job

We are currently looking for a Software/Data Engineer to join the team in Delft.

As a Software/Data Engineer in the Optics domain, your job will focus on developing and refining advanced Monte Carlo-based light propagation simulations to support the next generation of medical devices, with current applications in the skin, retina, and brain. You will work on an in-house Python simulation package alongside a multidisciplinary team of physicists, software developers, and biomedical engineers. Your contributions will directly impact research and product development in the medical technology field.

This role bridges the gap between software engineering, physics, and healthcare innovation, offering a unique opportunity to develop high-impact technology in collaboration with research institutions and companies worldwide.

Main responsibilities

  • Develop and refine optics simulation models for light transport through human tissue, focusing on skin applications and analysis for a variety of devices and projects.
  • Collaborate closely with domain experts to interpret simulation results and provide actionable insights.
  • Write and maintain analysis code for running virtual experiments and modeling scenarios.
  • Build and expand simulation tools, including AI/ML extensions for advanced data interpretation.
  • Organize and manage code and documentation using GitLab and related tools.
  • Support code optimization and troubleshooting, working with Python, MATLAB, and CUDA.
  • Conduct literature and medical research, integrating findings into simulation models.
  • Contribute to overall project organization and documentation workflows.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent experience)
  • Strong coding skills in Python; familiarity with MATLAB and CUDA is a plus
  • A keen interest in medical applications and contributing to healthcare innovation
  • Background in optics and light transport simulations is beneficial
  • Experience, understanding or education at bachelor’s level in physics or engineering is a strong asset (especially in optics and light transport simulations)
  • Experience with Git, managing large data structures, and familiarity with Pydantic and other useful Python packages
  • Experience applying AI/ML tools
  • Strong analytical mindset and a passion for finding patterns and meaning in complex datasets
  • Able to communicate fluently in English, both written and spoken, due to the international project environment

Our story

At S[&]T we contribute to a safer life on earth by translating space data into valuable and actionable insights. We oversee data from instruments to application, and apply our expertise within our software frameworks, information products and consultancy.

Our society relies on space and scientific instruments for climate change monitoring, navigation, defence and national security, and other crucial services we all use in our daily lives. These instruments produce an enormous quantity of complex data, and our goal is to unlock its value.

We have more than 20 years of experience working on instrument calibration, the creation of data quality monitoring tools, the development of real-time data processing frameworks, and the development of application-specific algorithms. With this, we help organisations, governments and industries to strengthen their information position and thereby improve their decision making. We focus on the following domains: Space & Science, Defence & Security, Environment & Sustainability, and High-Tech Consulting.
