How you can make your mark

Make your mark as intern at Boskalis! How? By adding value for Boskalis and its clients. Because that's what you do when you work on one of our projects around the world!

Internship project proposal: Simulation and Validation of Wave Loads on Monopiles during Upending Operations using OpenFAST.
The primary objective of this internship project is to investigate the feasibility and methodology of calculating wave loads on Monopile structures during upending operations using OpenFast. Monopiles are often transported horizontally and then upended to a vertical position on a heavy lift vessel. During this process, part of the longer Monopiles are submerged in water, but they do not touch the seabed. Understanding the wave loads on these structures during upending is crucial for safe and efficient operations.

Your responsibilities as intern
The research will focus on the following key areas:

  1. Literature Review:
    • Conduct a comprehensive review of existing studies and methodologies for calculating wave loads on Monopile structures during upending operations.
    • Explore the capabilities and limitations of OpenFast in modeling wave loads on submerged and angled Monopiles during this specific scenario.
  2. Simulation Setup:
    • Develop a simulation model in OpenFast for a Monopile structure subjected to wave loads during upending operations.
    • Define the parameters for wave conditions, Monopile geometry, and material properties.
    • Ensure that vessel dynamics are excluded from the simulation (for simplicity).
  3. Simulation Execution:
    • Run simulations to analyze the wave loads on the Monopile structure during the upending process under various conditions.
    • Investigate the impact of different wave angles and submersion depths on the wave loads.
  4. Data Analysis:
    • Analyze the simulation results to identify trends and patterns in the wave loads.
    • Compare the results with Marine OrcaFlex simulation results based on the diffraction model (Marine department to assist with this).
  5. Feasibility Assessment:
    • Assess the feasibility of using OpenFast for calculating wave loads on Monopile structures during upending operations.
    • Identify any limitations or challenges encountered during the simulations.

Your qualities and experience
You can make your mark as intern if:

  • You are currently pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Marine Engineering, or a related field.
  • You have a basic knowledge of fluid mechanics and structural dynamics.
  • Proficiency in Python programming.
  • Familiarity with numerical methods and simulation techniques.
  • Prior experience or willingness to learn OpenFast software.

The following competencies are also important for the role of function:

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team.
  • Good communication skills for reporting and presenting findings.

During the job interviews, we challenge you to demonstrate with concrete examples why you possess these competencies.
