Your Job

ABN AMRO Clearing is a global leader in the domain of clearing, offering access to a wide range of listed instruments on markets across the globe. Our clients can select to open an account in one of our local offices in APAC, EU, or US and receive their daily position reporting on a regional basis. According to their preference and subject to applicable rules and regulations, they can also opt for a single master account, covering their activity globally in a consolidated report.

Job Context

ABN AMRO Clearing is designated as a mono-line company within ABN AMRO and holds its own banking license (ABN AMRO Clearing Bank NV). Globally the company consists of about 900 FTEs and is self-sufficient, organizing its own supporting organization. As a chapter lead, you reside within the IT organization and are responsible for the ‘how’ in the organization in terms of (technical) way of working and people management.

Job Purpose

A chapter lead forms the most important connection between the (business) developers and the chapter area lead, making sure that the developers receive day-to-day coaching. While attributed limited managerial capabilities (15 FTE max.), a chapter lead still spends about 70% of their day-to-day activities on non-managerial tasks like developing code or translating business requirements for IT. About 30% of the time is spent directly coaching their peers.

In short, a chapter lead is responsible for the “how” within the competence of the chapter in terms of way of working and people management. They are responsible for:

  • Being an active block member, bringing expertise into the block and working on day-to-day tasks from the block’s backlog
  • Defining professional standards, work methodologies, and (technical) standards within the chapter competency
  • Setting up interaction and knowledge-sharing processes within the chapter
  • Act as a thought-leader within their area of expertise, guiding, motivating, and inspiring chapter members
  • Lead performance evaluation from their direct reports by coaching them both on soft and hard skills

An essential part of the chapter lead role is helping to develop talent within your craft. As an expert and servant leader, you are able to coach and develop your chapter members to become better craftspeople and to find their own rewarding career paths. Importantly, while you provide sparring and craft-specific support to your chapter members, you do not manage their day-to-day activities.

Three main types of responsibilities:

  • Define best practice way of working
  • Perform strategic workforce planning (for your chapter, together with the Chapter Area Lead)
  • Manage and grow people

Along with other Risk IT Engineers, you work on large technical projects, help set the direction for the development of our clearing and risk management application landscape, and serve as a role model within the organization. You establish vision and technical direction for major initiatives and build high quality and architecturally sound systems. You develop a deep understanding of trading, clearing, risk management, and what the 'machine' is doing. You're not attached to tools and technologies, but you focus on solving problems.

You work on the most complex projects while questioning every assumption, involving fellow engineers, business partners, and analysts. This also means hands-on programming, testing, and putting the new solutions into production. You bring clarity to complexity and demonstrate smart ways to simplify our ecosystem. Together with your team, you deliver value to the business partners, aiming for stakeholder satisfaction. The scope of our systems is large and our technology leaders trust you with one of our most important assets. Your decisions have a substantial impact on the trust in the financial market space and the flow of millions of Euros. Your actions will result in meeting obligations towards clients and regulators and extending our reputation as a trusted clearing partner.

Expertise

As a chapter lead, you’re considered a (thought) leader in your chapter’s area of expertise, which means you’re expected to:

  • Have strong engineering instinct and a growth mindset, with a solid understanding of computer science fundamentals, continuously improving your coding skills (C++)
  • Exhibit innovative, big-picture thinking grounded in real-world pragmatism
  • Have solid experience with IT development in an agile environment, where you get things done through building relationships and convincing people
  • Clearly express your thoughts and present work, e.g., during sprint review
  • Keen to explore ideas and problems through coding in close collaboration with others
  • Jump on problems, always ready to take action or escalate issues if it becomes necessary
  • Join the team in the office at least three times per week
  • Have strong affinity with financial services and risk management
  • Possess basic knowledge of the business proposition of ABN AMRO Clearing and its meaning for IT
  • Have at least 3 years of relevant working experience in the field of the chapter’s expertise
  • Have at least 3 years of relevant working experience (in)directly coaching other employees (this does not have to be from a managerial position)

Technological stack:

  • C++ 20
  • Postgres
  • Kafka
  • Redis
  • Linux (Bash)
  • Jenkins, Ansible
  • OpenShift

Working Environment

You’ll work in an agile setting alongside a culturally diverse group of individuals, based in Amsterdam, Chicago, and Sydney. You will be joining our Amsterdam office where hybrid working environments are supported. Our systems play an essential role in everything we do in the clearing and risk management domain. That is why our application development teams collaborate closely to explore ideas and set the new direction. Together we build and maintain an outstanding suite of reliable, high performing systems and applications.

Equal opportunities for all

The success of our organisation depends on the quality of our people and the ideas that they have. Truly surprising insights and innovative solutions for our clients result from an interplay of cultures, knowledge, and experience. Diversity is therefore extremely important to our organisation. To ensure that everyone at ABN AMRO can develop their talents, we encourage an inclusive culture in which all colleagues feel engaged and appreciated.
