The Role

Happy to inform you that we are looking for a Tax Specialist at our headquarters in Gorinchem. You will be part of “Group Finance” (total of 20 people) and will report to Hans Peter Spruit (Group Head of Tax). The vacant function will provide you the opportunity to be at the core of the development of the new Tax function within Damen. As a Tax Specialist, you will support the Head of Tax and Sr. Indirect Tax Manager in their daily job. As a member of the team, you will contribute to the development and implementation of the tax strategy, the fit-for-purpose control framework, and advising the business on direct and indirect tax matters. The function allows you to build your network within Damen and other stakeholders like the Dutch Tax Authorities, peers within the Maritime sector, and a global network of advisors. You will be introduced in the tax workstreams of Damen’s SAP4Hana implementation, M&A deals, supply chain optimizations, complex global shipbuilding projects, ad hoc tax advice for our international operations, and building the tax function of the next generation. We are developing a tax toolbox and control framework for the Damen Shipbuilding, Shiprepair, and Services business, that will bring new valuable experiences to your professional life guaranteeing a steep learning curve.

Key Accountabilities

More specifically, your job as a Tax Specialist consists of the following:
  • Co-developing and roll-out of Damen’s global tax strategy, including implementing identified projects
  • Support in the roll-out and development of Damen Shipyards Group Tax Control Framework and thereby identify, manage, and control tax risks and opportunities of certain processes
  • Supportive in setting up the tax accounting & reporting process
  • Develop an efficient way of documenting the Tax Controls for the next generations
  • Maximize efficiencies in working and reporting systems to reduce VAT liabilities in a very challenging supply chain where possible either through ERP system or manual intervention
  • Monitoring and documenting the Damen Shipyards Group Transfer Pricing Policy at the local operational entities, contribution to BEPS compliance, including Master File, Local File, and CbC reporting
  • Carrying out the Damen Shipyards Group Transfer Pricing Policy and implementing it at the local operational entities
  • Assisting in maintaining the strong relationship with the Dutch Tax Authorities
  • Managing daily tax affairs of Dutch shipyards (repair) yards, including preparing the corporation tax return and managing the CIT fiscal unity
  • Support with M&A deals (due diligence, real estate transfers, divestments, etc.)
  • Advising key stakeholders on the tax consequences of changes in the corporate or organizational structure and/or intended transactions by operational entities
  • Evaluate and maintain interpretation of (international) laws and regulations, including informing the business about relevant changes and risks
  • Increasing fiscal knowledge / awareness within the organization by giving presentations and training on direct and indirect tax matters
  • Traveling will be necessary occasionally

Skills & Experience

The ideal candidate has a completed Tax Law or Tax Economics study and a minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience within the tax advisory practice at a leading tax advisory firm and/or as an in-house tax manager. You have an excellent knowledge of (inter)national tax law and preferably experience in the field of direct and indirect taxes. Have the ability to think divergently and are hands-on in building smart tools that contribute to the tax controls. Strong communication skills (both oral and written) in English and Dutch and good SharePoint, PowerPoint, and Excel skills are also required.
