Want to make your mark on our time? Become an Optical Design Engineer at TNO in Eindhoven!

About this position

We’re looking for a skilled engineer passionate about integrated photonics packaging, eager to drive innovation in this rapidly advancing field. As an Optical Design Engineer, you’ll have the unique opportunity to work on groundbreaking advancements in integrated photonics through two pioneering centers: the Photonic Integration Technology Center (PITC) and the Chip integration Technology Center (CITC). Both, founded by TNO and its partners. PITC specializes in photonic chips for sectors such as mobility, healthcare, and communications, addressing needs like road safety, health monitoring, and secure, energy-efficient data transmission. CITC leads in semiconductor and chip packaging, advancing versatile and compact applications. These two initiatives provide an ideal environment for cutting-edge R&D in photonic design and packaging. In this dynamic role, you will be involved in both CITC and PITC, working at our locations in Nijmegen and Eindhoven.

What will be your role?

You will work on groundbreaking assembly packaging technology for integrated photonics. Your work is at the intersection of materials science, process technology, front-end technology, back-end technology, and integrated photonics.

Your main responsibilities will include:
  • Develop and test optical interconnect and assembly designs and processes for a next generation of integrated photonic applications.
  • Participate knowledgeably and take responsibility in ongoing collaborative projects with international customers.
  • Partnering closely with industry collaborators to develop reliable, high-performance photonic packaging solutions.

What we expect from you

Preferably, you have 3+ years of work experience in the integrated photonics industry, in the field of optical design. Your knowledge of optical interconnect technology and optical modelling software such as Zemax, Lumerical or similar is excellent. You have a hands-on mentality and are able to organize practical work in an efficient and collaborative manner.

Furthermore, you have:
  • A MSc/BSc degree in optical engineering, materials science or a related field.
  • Hands-on knowledge of evaluation and testing of optical interfaces.
  • Knowledge of data processing, analysis, and communication of results.
  • Good communication skills in English.
  • Hands-on experience with optical metrology and testing equipment for alignment and coupling efficiency.
  • Familiarity with advanced packaging techniques, such as flip-chip and wafer-level packaging, is preferred.
  • Excellent teamwork and communication skills.

What you'll get in return

Challenging and varied work with a real impact. And plenty of opportunities as, at TNO, you are in charge of shaping your career. We offer a gross monthly salary (based on your knowledge and experience), 8% holiday pay, a 13th month bonus of 8.33% and a flex budget (5.58% + € 180). In addition, you will be given every opportunity to develop yourself. Perhaps you would like to grow your career in the direction of commerce or consultancy? Or would you like to become a project manager? Immerse yourself in sustainable innovations? Or carve out a career as a technical expert? TNO offers optional employee benefits, enabling you to tailor your benefits package to match your personal situation. You may also expect:

  • An extremely professional, innovative working environment where colleagues are leading experts in their field.
  • The opportunity to attend courses, workshops and conferences, and to receive training and coaching based on your needs.
  • 33 days annual leave on a full-time basis.
  • An employer that values and encourages diverse talent, with initiatives like the Female Leadership Program, our Rainbow Community, and round tables on inclusion topics.
  • A comprehensive and flexible mobility plan that includes full compensation for public transportation for commuting and business travel.
  • Great social events with your team and other TNO colleagues. That’s how you will get to know a lot of people really quickly.
  • Flexible working hours, the possibility to work part-time (32 or 36 hours) and the possibility of working from home.
  • An extensive relocation package for international candidates.
  • A good pension scheme.
