Job Title: Industrial Placement Naval Ships Hardware Engineer

Company Overview: We design and build a full range of naval ships from offshore patrol vessels through to giant aircraft carriers, giving customers the capability to fulfill extensive naval operations around the world. We are the only provider of complex warships and their combat management systems to the UK Royal Navy’s surface fleet. Do you have what it takes to join our Naval Ships team?

Why BAE Systems?

This is a place where you’ll be able to make a real difference. You’ll be part of an inclusive culture that values diversity, rewards integrity and merit, and where you’ll be empowered to fulfill your potential. We welcome candidates from all backgrounds and particularly from sections of the community who are currently underrepresented within our industry, including women, ethnic minorities, people with disabilities, and LGBTQ+ individuals.

What You Will Be Doing

Would you like to play a role in one of the most advanced engineering projects in the world and one of the most significant and complex defense programs in the UK? Are you good at solving problems by looking at them from the bigger picture? Do you enjoy the challenge of predicting how changing one part of a complex system will affect all the other parts of the system as a whole? Then hardware engineering is the perfect career path for you!

In a multi-disciplinary role across a ship, aircraft carrier, or patrol vessel, you will be focusing on the bigger picture and bridging the gaps between disciplines. Throughout the different stages of a product lifecycle, you’ll take the lead in systems integration and testing, qualification, and acceptance. As well as the technical aspects of projects, you’ll also learn to consider important factors such as schedules, costs, training, and environmental concerns.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Capturing and analyzing requirements to understand the customer/business needs. Undertaking both initial design and detailed design activities as the maturity of the design progresses through its development phases.
  • Producing drawings, circuits, and other documentation to capture hardware design aspects and facilitate repeatable testing and resolving technical issues arising during design or testing activities.
  • Supporting the creation of Procurement Specifications for the purchase of items from third parties in line with the requirements of the system design.
  • Continually developing your hardware engineering capabilities to ensure knowledge and skills keep pace with best practice and technology.
  • Articulating and presenting arguments clearly, logically, and simply.
  • Undertaking equipment testing as part of the assurance process to verify that the design meets its requirements.
  • Supporting the installation of hardware both at land-based sites and on ships, supporting EMC, shock, and vibration trials, supporting the equipment when in service, providing technical support for new bids and undertakings.

Skills

As a minimum requirement, you’ll need to be on track to obtain a 2.2 in your Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Computer Engineering. To be considered for this role you must be returning to university to complete your degree.

Opportunities for Growth and Development

We encourage employees to explore projects beyond their primary responsibilities, providing them with diverse experiences. With a wide range of products and a multinational presence, there are ample opportunities for employees to engage in various projects and initiatives.

Community Involvement

In addition to professional development, BAE Systems values community engagement. Employees are encouraged to participate in community projects, STEM initiatives, and employee resource groups, offering valuable learning experiences outside of their regular roles.

Retention and Career Development

Recognizing the importance of retaining talented individuals, we offer sponsorship, career development support, and high-potential development programs. These initiatives aim to help employees plan their careers effectively and provide opportunities for accelerated development for those who demonstrate aspiration, ability, and performance.

Benefits

You’ll receive benefits including a competitive pension scheme, enhanced annual leave allowance, and a company-contributed Share Incentive Plan. You’ll also have access to additional benefits such as flexible working, an employee assistance program, Cycle2work, and employee discounts – you may also be eligible for an annual incentive.

Inclusivity within our Recruitment Process

We want to make sure that our recruitment processes are as inclusive as possible. If you have a disability or health condition (for example dyslexia, autism, an anxiety disorder, etc.) that may affect your performance in certain assessment types, please speak to your recruiter about potential reasonable adjustments.

Our Environmental Responsibility

As a future-focused business, we’re committed to changing the world we live in for the better. Our target is to achieve net-zero emissions by 2030. We’re innovating new ways to develop on-site renewable electricity and setting ambitious targets for water consumption and waste generation.

Export Control/Security

Please be aware that many roles at BAE Systems are subject to both security and export control restrictions. These restrictions mean that factors such as your nationality, any nationalities you may have previously held, and your place of birth can restrict the roles you are eligible to perform within the organization. All applicants must as a minimum achieve Baseline Personnel Security Standard. Many roles also require higher levels of National Security Vetting where applicants must typically have 5 to 10 years of continuous residency in the UK, depending on the vetting level required for the role, to allow for meaningful security vetting checks.
