Job Description: Category Buyer

The Category Buyer is responsible for the negotiation and contractualization of long-term agreements with Strategic Partners as identified in the Category strategy, with the main objective to increase SBM competitiveness and security of supply. The category strategy is a consolidation of:
  • Your market knowledge for the targeted products
  • Your commercial acumen and negotiation skills
  • Your expertise in Total Cost of Ownership methodology
  • Your mastery in creating Cost Breakdown models
  • Your good understanding of the products in your category in liaison with technical stakeholders
  • Your assessment of the capabilities of the key vendors and their sub-vendors in your category including the manufacturing processes, execution, and subcontracting model

You are supporting the Category Manager in the effective management of strategically important vendors and the efficient global sourcing of key equipment. You ensure that commercial agreements match projects and operations needs, bringing benefits such as simplification, competitive prices, and manufacturing slots reservation. You support the Category Manager in developing long-term relationships with strategic vendors and seek to continually embark lessons learned into vendor commercial improvement monitoring.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Develop and monitor Category Commercial Agreements to align with company strategic objectives and project/operations requirements:
    1. Participate in defining the roadmap of future technological requirements for the category
    2. Provide input to Category Manager to align market analysis with future project requirements
    3. Lead preparation and finalization of Commercial Agreements, including sustainability goals
    4. Monitor Category Commercial Agreement performance
    5. Lead vendor qualification activities for strategic vendors
    6. Leverage the vendor network to build competitive advantages
    7. Support negotiation with vendors for key packages/services using benchmark and cost breakdown models
    8. Ensure best practices/lessons learned are captured and implemented
  2. Measure and monitor category performance to achieve Group SC objectives:
    1. Monitor contracted savings from the implementation of the category strategy
    2. Report SC KPIs for the category
  3. Develop sustainable collaboration with strategic vendors:
    1. Increase SBM attractiveness for greater value
    2. Monitor vendor’s financial data, load level, capacity, and investment plans
    3. Identify risks & opportunities related to the vendor
    4. Support Project & Operations teams when vendor relationships are at risk
Functional Competencies
  • Commercial Profile - Negotiator - Contractual Negotiation
  • 10 years experience in Procurement role in EPCI company or Sales engineer/Project Procurement Manager
  • Construction Site or Manufacturing plant experience is a plus
