About us

Get on board with Damen Naval, along with more than 1,200 professionals based in The Netherlands, Romania, and Germany. We are the naval division of the family-owned Damen Shipyards Group which employs 12,000 professionals globally. Damen Naval designs and builds advanced naval vessels for customers all over the world. With a passion for technological innovation and sustainable solutions, we continue to push the boundaries in naval shipbuilding. You can be part of our team! Are you ready for duty?

The role

As the Tender Engineer Marine Engineering at Damen Naval’s Proposals department, you are responsible for conceptual and contract design of mechanical marine engineering systems (propulsion, mechanical handling, HVAC, firefighting, auxiliary systems…) for our state-of-the-art naval vessels while complying with all requirements and regulations.

Working as a member of the multidisciplinary (tender) project team, you come up with innovative marine engineering design solutions as part of a commercially viable and attractive proposition. You have a winning mentality, combined with excellent numerical and digital insights as it involves complex solutions. You are also a gifted writer, able to substantiate your figures and solutions in a compelling and convincing document, set to win over the customer. After a successful tender, you are responsible for a smooth transition of your work towards our engineering and production departments for detailed engineering and realization.

Key accountabilities

As the Tender Engineer Marine Engineering, your key responsibilities will be:

  • Define general system architectures (P&ID’s, high level 2D/3D CAD arrangements, MBSE models), weight, power and cost estimations, main ships balances and (propulsion) system configurations as part of the design and tender package.
  • Contribute to requirements analysis, draft marine engineering specifications, and support subcontractor quotation processes and evaluations, for purposes of preliminary equipment selection and budget allocation.
  • Evaluate designs against requirements and prepare corresponding reports.
  • Write technical documents, contract specifications, and reports, effectively communicating complex concepts and data to customers and suppliers.
  • Participate in discussions with customers, suppliers, and other stakeholders on technical and commercial aspects of proposed solutions.
  • Support cost evaluations provided by suppliers and internal stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with internal departments to optimize project outcomes.

Skills & experience

To excel as a Tender Engineer Marine Engineering, you should possess the following qualifications and qualities:

  • At least one year of relevant experience in marine engineering design concepts and practices, preferably in complex naval (tender) projects.
  • Excellent writing skills, able to deliver compelling text, figures and calculations encompassing very specific technical details and specifications.
  • A commercial mind-set to deliver viable yet attractive technical and financial forecasts and propositions.
  • Bachelor or Masters degree in Marine Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Excellent command of the English language both written and verbal, preferably also Dutch. Willingness to learn Dutch is a job requirement.
  • Willingness to travel abroad occasionally.
  • Excellent reference antecedents as a pre-employment security screening is standard part of the recruitment procedure.
  • Permanent EU citizenship and passport are both required and candidates with NL/EU (work) visa or with both an EU and non-EU nationality and/or passport are not eligible in accordance with the requirements imposed by the military nature of our projects.
