Summer Intern Submarines Structural Engineer

Location: Barrow (Cumbria) Start Date: 23rd June 2025

What you will be doing

As a Structural Engineering Summer Intern, you will join an exciting team who work throughout the whole submarine life cycle, from concept through to activities with the operational fleet across our current, new, and future classes of submarine like Astute, Dreadnought & SSN-AUKUS.

Duties and Responsibilities

You could be involved in designing, developing, and modelling complex systems, components, and products, as well as supporting build, test, commissioning, and in-service operation, including but not limited to the following areas:

  • Structural design of Submarines
  • Designing equipment to withstand shock and dynamic movements of the submarine whilst in operation
  • Lifting arrangement design and oversight of submarine movements within our Specialist Structural Engineering team
  • Structural and Stress Analysis
  • Outfit design – including sheet metal, deck coverings, furniture and fittings, to ensure a habitable submarine environment

Skills

As a minimum requirement you’ll need to be on track to obtain a 2.2 in your Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a relevant STEM subject, Structural, Mechanical, or Civil Engineering. To be considered for this role you must be returning to university to complete your degree.
