The Role

As the Software Architect of Innovative Solutions within our Research, Development & Innovation (RD&I) Department, you design and lead the development of cutting-edge software solutions to test and implement advanced technologies such as IoT, AI, robotics, and digital twins. These solutions will be leveraged to optimize and enhance our internal processes related to the design, engineering, and manufacturing of naval vessels.

Key Accountabilities

  • Designing the overall software architecture, ensuring alignment with Damen Naval’s research goals and seamless integration with other systems.
  • Ensuring newly developed software architecture aligns with the Damen Enterprise Architecture and coordinating with the IT architecture team for integration.
  • Collaborating with researchers and stakeholders to understand software needs and translating requirements into technical specifications for the development team.
  • Identifying and evaluating relevant technologies and tools for software solutions, considering scalability, security, and compatibility with existing systems.
  • Developing prototypes or proof of concepts to validate proposed solutions and demonstrate key functionalities to stakeholders.
  • Working closely with departments such as Engineering, IT, and Projects to ensure seamless integration with hardware components, considering the challenges of the naval (warfare) environment.
  • Ensuring software systems comply with industry/government standards, security protocols, and regulatory requirements relevant to naval shipbuilding.
  • Designing scalable software architecture and optimizing performance to meet the demands of complex naval research projects.
  • Contributing to the validation and verification of software systems and applications, helping to identify potential issues early in the development process.
  • Creating comprehensive documentation for the software architecture, design decisions, and relevant processes to facilitate communication and knowledge transfer within the team.

Skills & Experience

To excel as a Software Architect of Innovative Solutions, you should possess the following qualifications and qualities:

  • Bachelor degree in IT or another relevant study with at least 3-5 years relevant experience, or master degree with at least one year of relevant experience.
  • Solid experience in designing systems that scale efficiently and maintain high performance.
  • Proficiency in multiple programming languages and frameworks (e.g. C++/C#/Python).
  • Deep understanding of software design patterns and best practices.
  • Knowledge of various architectural styles (e.g., microservices, monolithic, event-driven).
  • Knowledge of security best practices and ability to design secure systems.
  • Experience with integrating different systems and third-party services.
  • Good command of the English, and preferably also Dutch language (written & verbal).
  • Excellent references antecedents as a pre-employment security screening is standard part of the recruitment procedure.
  • Permanent EU citizenship and passport are both required.
