The department of Reliable Structures performs research on many types of assets such as bridges, locks, storm surge barriers, and buildings. We have teams working on civil structures, building materials, dynamics, risk and reliability. Together, we want to make the built environment more innovative, and we need your skills and ideas to achieve that!
The Risk and Reliability team focuses on providing insight into risks and uncertainties in the built environment. By combining knowledge of the mechanical behavior of structures with risk and reliability analyses, it is possible to design, manage, maintain and replace structures with a risk-based approach. In our daily work we combine both physical and probabilistic (computational) models, data assimilation, statistical analysis, as well as expert judgement. Our knowledge is widely applicable: we work on projects concerning (hydraulic) structures, building, tunnels, roads, railways, cables, pipelines, and offshore structures. In the past, our interns have worked on improving the assessment of loads on structures and buildings, performed a full probabilistic analysis of a submerged floating tunnel, and worked on reliability assessment of buildings subjected to wind loading. Furthermore, they have calibrated partial factors for Eurocode design formulas using a full probabilistic approach, performed reliability analyses of concrete stand-elements, proposed placement of monitoring sensors on bridges using the Bayesian approach, and more.
