Develop data analytics and mathematical models to detect criminal networks.

Job description

The FORT-PORT project has started in January 2024 and will run until the summer of 2028. It consists of a large team of senior researchers, postdocs, and PhD students at several Dutch universities. The purpose of the project is to help government and nongovernment institutions fight subversive crime in and around the port of Rotterdam.

TU Delft brings in expertise in this project from the data analytics side. You will work in a team of criminologists, legal scholars, economists, and computer scientists. You contribute to the development of quantitative studies on detecting ongoing crime and security of the Port of Rotterdam. You will assist consortium members such as the Harbour authorities, the Mainport Terminal services, the Seaport and Militart police, and the combined intelligence unit SKC. Select proper data analysis tools for criminology studies, develop social network models to detect subversion, or find open source data. Apart from reporting your results in the scientific literature, you will advise authorities and businesses on how to implement better policies for crime prevention. This project gives you a chance to bring your data analytic skills to policy makers and crime fighters.

The candidate will be hosted at Applied Mathematics (DIAM) in the

department of Applied Probability, co-supervised by Robbert Fokkink and Huijuan

Wang.

  • EU citizenship;
  • proficiency in English;
  • proficiency in Dutch is a plus point.

Conditions of employment

Faculty Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science

The Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (EEMCS) brings together three scientific disciplines. Combined, they reinforce each other and are the driving force behind the technology we all use in our daily lives. Technology such as the electricity grid, which our faculty is helping to make completely sustainable and future-proof. At the same time, we are developing the chips and sensors of the future, whilst also setting the foundations for the software technologies to run on this new generation of equipment – which of course includes AI. Meanwhile we are pushing the limits of applied mathematics, for example mapping out disease processes using single cell data, and using mathematics to simulate gigantic ash plumes after a volcanic eruption. In other words: there is plenty of room at the faculty for ground-breaking research. We educate innovative engineers and have excellent labs and facilities that underline our strong international position. In total, more than 1000 employees and 4,000 students work and study in this innovative environment.
