The flood safety standards in the Netherlands are based on flood risks, which are determined by running flood scenarios for all locations prone to flooding. Previous MSc theses at Royal HaskoningDHV have shown that flood simulations are sensitive to the description of breach development (see Westerhof (2019) & Klein Wolterink (2022)). The assumptions used while describing breach development have a significant impact on the discharge through a breach and therefore on the flood safety standards in the Netherlands. This leads to several questions:
We would like to do further research into the accuracy of breach development and the consequences of that on flood simulations and safety standards.
As different breach development formulas are used in modelling software, the first step of this research is to determine the ways in which breach development is modelled. This includes the models itself, but also other methods in literature. We want you to find the method(s) that corresponds to observations from experiments and compare that to the breach development formulas used in hydraulic models.
The second aspect is implementing the found dike breach development in the hydraulic model D-Hydro. D-Hydro has a standard breach development formula, so we need to find smart ways to adjust the resistance to match an actual breach. We would therefore like to challenge you to develop way(s) to properly model the breach development, without altering the breach development formula itself. For a student interested in soil mechanics the last two questions might be subject of the assignment too.
