Are you a Python Developer who enjoys turning engineering challenges into smart digital solutions? At Van Oord, you will build applications that help engineers worldwide plan and optimize complex projects. Working with Python, Vue, PostgreSQL, and Kubernetes, you'll be part of a Scrum team where innovation, collaboration, and real impact go hand in hand.

The position

At Van Oord, digital applications play a key role in enabling efficient, standardized and future proof ways of working. Data plays an increasingly important role in how we plan, execute, and improve our projects worldwide. To further strengthen our development capabilities, we are looking for a Python Developer to join our Production Engineering Application Management team and contribute to building high-quality production engineering applications.

The Production Engineering Application Management team supports the Production Engineering team within the Tendering & Engineering department. This team is responsible for developing, supporting and improving the applications used by the Production Engineers in the Production Engineering landscape. Production Engineers are responsible for estimating and optimizing the execution duration of our projects, focused on our main assets.

Your impact

In this role, you will develop and maintain applications that support engineers during both tender and project execution phases. You will work in a Scrum team to deliver user-focused, scalable, and reliable solutions. You combine strong technical expertise with a proactive mindset, ensuring that applications not only function correctly but also provide real value to end users. You play an important role in translating engineering needs into practical and efficient digital solutions.

Your main responsibilities include developing and maintaining Python-based applications used by engineers, contributing to full-stack development across frontend, backend, and databases, collaborating closely with development teams, operations, and end users, and actively supporting the continuous improvement of both development processes and the applications themselves.

  • Develop production simulation platforms, models and calculations (i.e. digital twin) to optimize predictive capabilities by translating key business challenges into new simulation concepts.
  • Develop production applications, improve the user experience, and assist in adoption by explaining them to end users and business stakeholders.
  • Design, build, and maintain scalable, reliable applications using technologies such as Python, Vue, and PostgreSQL.
  • Develop and manage CI/CD pipelines and containerized environments, such as Kubernetes, to support efficient deployment and operations.
  • Ensure high code quality by writing clean, well-documented code and applying thorough testing and debugging practices.
  • Monitor application performance, proactively identify issues, and implement effective solutions.
  • Collaborate actively within a Scrum team, contribute to ceremonies, maintain strong communication with stakeholders, and continuously improve development practices, including version control, testing strategies, and documentation standards.

Your workplace

You will be based in Rotterdam as part of the Production Engineering Application Management team in the T&E Shared Service Center.

About you

You are a driven and pragmatic software developer who enjoys building solutions that truly support engineers in their daily work. With a solid foundation in Python and modern development practices, you take ownership of your work and actively contribute to improving both applications and ways of working. You feel comfortable operating in a collaborative Scrum environment and combine technical expertise with a user-focused mindset. You bring:

  • 1-3 years of experience in a similar software development role, with 3-5 years of Python application development experience (medior/senior level).
  • BSc or MSc degree in dredging, civil, offshore, maritime engineering, or another relevant technical field.
  • Strong Python development skills and experience with modern software engineering practices, including Git, testing, documentation, and CI/CD.
  • Affinity with full-stack development, including Vue, PostgreSQL, Kubernetes, and related technologies.
  • Experience working in Scrum/Agile environments, combined with strong analytical and problem-solving skills to translate complex requirements into practical solutions.
  • Proactive, user-focused communicator who can understand business processes, translate them into new functionalities, and coach team members when needed.
  • Dutch citizen or holder of a valid residence permit that allows working in the Netherlands.

This is your opportunity to make a visible contribution to projects that support the energy transition while developing your career in an international environment. What do we offer you:
