Can you see yourself working on projects that make the Netherlands future-proof? As a Cost Engineer at Van Oord, you’ll be the one laying the technical and financial foundation for our most challenging infrastructure projects.

The position

At Van Oord, we work every day on projects that protect and connect the Netherlands. These include dike reinforcements, coastal protection, and new infrastructure connections that contribute to a safe and accessible country. Examples include projects such as the Afsluitdijk, ViA15, various WFD and PAGW projects, and dike reinforcements such as Tiel-Waardenburg, the IJsselmeer Dike, and Groene Rivier Well. Behind every successful project is a strong tender team that combines technical expertise, strategy, and financial acumen.

As a Cost Estimator, you play a key role in this. You ensure that complex infrastructure projects are budgeted in a way that is both technically sound and financially realistic. With your experience, you help us make smart choices regarding design, execution, and risks. In doing so, you have a direct impact on projects that make a difference for the Netherlands.

Your impact

As a Cost Estimator within our Infra Land product line, you will help prepare cost estimates for our infrastructure projects. Together with tender and project managers and engineers, you will contribute to technically sound and financially well-founded bids.

You’ll support the team in preparing cost estimates, analyzing tender documents, and justifying technical decisions. In doing so, you’ll further develop your ability to translate technical information into clear and realistic budgets. This will help lay an important foundation for competitive and feasible proposals. You’ll also be responsible for:

  • Preparing simple budgets and sub-budgets under supervision.
  • Analyzing tender documents and gathering technical input.
  • Identifying risks in budgets.
  • Conducting site visits under supervision.
  • Developing simple work methods and schedules.
  • Collaborating in integrated tender teams with engineers, planners, and risk specialists.

Your workplace

You will be working within Tendering & Engineering (T&E): the technical and strategic heart of Van Oord. Here, knowledge and experience from various disciplines come together to develop innovative solutions for complex projects.

As part of the Infra Land product line, you’ll work on infrastructure projects in the Netherlands and neighboring countries. You’ll be part of an integrated tender team and a professional network of more than 30 cost engineers within the Dredging & Infra Business Unit, 6 of whom are part of Infra Land. Together, you’ll ensure that our bids are technically sound, financially competitive, and feasible.

About you

For this role, we are looking for a professional with a technical background and strong analytical skills. You are able to quickly grasp the essence of projects and translate technical details into realistic cost estimates and strategic advice. You also bring the following to the table:

  • A completed higher professional education (HBO) or university (WO) degree (preferably in civil engineering).
  • Basic knowledge of geotechnical engineering, equipment, and projects, or the motivation to learn these quickly.
  • Analytical skills and an interest in both numbers and technology.
  • Curious, eager to learn, and not afraid to ask questions.
  • Residing in the Netherlands and fluent in both Dutch and English.

We offer

In this role you help us grow this ambitious product line. You bring purpose into the center of our projects and you recognize the direct impact of your ideas in tenders and projects.

  • Attractive travel allowance (€0.31 per km) and home working allowance (€2.45 per day).
  • 32 holidays (of which a maximum of 7 are collective).
  • Variable bonus.
  • Attractive pension scheme.
  • Option for collective health insurance (Van Oord pays for your supplementary package).
  • Extensive development opportunities, including a comprehensive online academy via Goodhabitz.
  • Communities to join, such as Young Van Oord, Van Oord Women, and the Van Oord staff association.
  • Various events and sports activities, such as skiing, sailing weekends, cycling, and motorcycling.

‘You come up with something at your desk and then see it actually working on a ship. That’s incredibly rewarding.’
