Would you like to work on a newly designed and built employee solution, used by thousands and thousands of employees of Albert Heijn? As a Back End Engineer, you can make a direct impact on a priority project, using modern technologies in a fast-developing environment.

Your new job and office

At AH Technology, you team up with inspiring peers in the data, digital and tech domains. A community of diverse individuals who share a common goal: to create digital solutions that make (online) shopping simpler and more inspiring. We invest heavily in data, digital and tech, and that includes investing in your career.

About the job

Being a Backend Engineer for our Digital Employee Experience in the AH Retail Tech Platform means you are responsible for all the back-end services of Albert Heijn's employee app, called ‘@AH’, used by more than 100,000 employees. This app has many functionalities, like checking out AH news, connecting to colleagues via chat, and viewing work schedules. Even more exciting, there’s much more on our roadmap for the upcoming months and years, like GenAI, task management, digital onboarding and training, and scaling to new business units and other brands within Ahold Delhaize.

As a passionate Medior Engineer, you help with the realization of new features. You contribute by maintaining the high security and coding standards of the platform, developing new features using the latest technology, and leveraging GenAI-powered development tools effectively.

You participate in standups and refinements, develop code, enforce code quality, develop best practices, write tests and manage the continuous integration of code.

More specifically, as a Backend Engineer you:

  • Develop a feature-rich product for our employees, guided by a senior developer
  • Understand how to technically scale the services in the employee experience platform, which empowers the “@AH app”
  • Understand how to combine best agile development practices with a services-based architecture
  • Are knowledgeable in your domain: Kotlin back-end services on our Azure Kubernetes platform, while also being able to liaise with other engineers and their respective front-end and back-end technologies

Why we believe this is a cool job

  • You get to work with modern technologies, and since this is a newly built solution, we have zero legacy
  • Opportunity to learn more about test automation and IT security, as long as you have a solid background as a backend developer in Kotlin
  • Everything we build in the app is scalable, using Azure, microservices, Kubernetes and CI/CD pipelines. We work in small increments so we’re able to put things live straight away and reduce our time to market
  • We work in a multidisciplinary team with dedicated QA, UX designer, developers and product owner. In total the team consists of 8+ people
  • This initiative, building an employee app for your own colleagues, is a priority project for Albert Heijn, with the potential of scaling to other brands within Ahold Delhaize

What do you bring

To be successful as our new medior back end engineer you bring:

  • A Technology/IT Engineering bachelor’s or master’s degree, or equivalent work experience
  • Experience with Kotlin and some experience with MongoDB, Azure, Docker, Kubernetes and/or Kafka
  • Knowledge of CI/CD, including test automation integrations and release engineering automation; we use Azure DevOps and GitHub Actions
  • Effective communication in English
  • Nice to have: knowledge of React Native

The right ingredients for an impactful job

  • 45 days of paid leave: 25.5 regular vacation days and 19.5 ADV days
  • Access to a challenging training curriculum – AH Tech Academy
  • An excellent pension plan where we as an employer contribute 4.5 more than you as an employee
  • A travel allowance or a NS-business card for traveling to and from Zaandam by train
  • Attractive discounts on various insurance policies
  • 10% staff discount on groceries in all Albert Heijn stores, up to a maximum of €300 per year
  • A free Mijn Albert Heijn Premium membership with many benefits
  • A company laptop and telephone
