Join our Mathematics Department as a PhD candidate and explore cutting‑edge invariants of singular foliations, working with advanced tools like groupoids, cyclic cohomology, C*-algebras and K‑theory.

The Department of Mathematics is seeking a highly motivated PhD candidate for a research position funded by the NWO ENW-M2 project ‘New invariants of singular foliations’. This project is about developing and applying new invariants of singular foliations. Key tools to be used are (Lie) groupoids, cyclic cohomology, C*-algebras, K-theory, index theory, and general geometry and analysis on manifolds.

The PhD project will be supervised by Dr Peter Hochs. This project involves collaboration with Dr Hessel Posthuma at the University of Amsterdam and another PhD candidate under Dr Posthuma’s supervision. We will support you throughout the PhD process to engage in research, participate in local, national and international meetings and report on your results in scientific publications. This position has a light teaching load of up to 10% of your working time.

At Radboud University, I can fully focus on expanding my expertise while learning from my peers and mentors. Noemí Segura-Solé PhD candidate in Microbial Ecology
After completing my Master’s degree in Norway, I looked at several European universities for a PhD position, including the university where I studied. Then I saw a job opportunity at Radboud University, which aligned perfectly with my interests. After a great first impression of my supervisors during the job interview and positive feedback about Radboud University from my network, I decided to take the leap and move to Nijmegen. It was a risk to leave my Norwegian comfort zone, but I am extremely satisfied with my choice.
From the start, I immediately felt welcomed by the whole department. I have many social interactions with other PhD candidates, and the senior researchers are very approachable and interested in my research. The working conditions for PhD candidates here are also excellent: a good salary, plenty of days off, and flexible working hours. The latter is an added bonus because I already had two children when I started my PhD.Thanks to these factors, I can fully focus on expanding my expertise while learning from my peers and mentors. Noemí Segura-Solé PhD candidate in Microbial Ecology

Where you will be working

The Department of Mathematics at Radboud University (Nijmegen, Netherlands) is part of the Institute for Mathematics, Astrophysics and Particle Physics of the Faculty of Science. The department represents a broad range of areas, including pure and applied analysis, differential geometry, algebraic geometry and topology, number theory, functional analysis, mathematical physics, non-commutative geometry, special functions and applied stochastics.

The Department of Mathematics has a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. We host regular research seminars, a range of specialist lectures and visitors to the department, as well as a number of informal events throughout the year. There are currently about 25 PhD candidates in the department, several of whom work in areas related to this project. This project fits into the interests of a broader community of mathematicians in the Netherlands working in related areas, with whom we regularly organise seminars and other events.
