Internship opportunity: ING Own Footprint

As part of our team, you’ll work in a dynamic, international environment where you learn at a fast pace and are hands-on from the start. Our ambition is to help build a healthy and sustainable society worldwide. A central part of our mission is providing end-to-end sustainable operations services while reducing our own operational carbon footprint. You’ll be part of the team continuously improving our carbon footprint reporting structure. It’s an opportunity to learn about sustainability in fields such as tech, procurement and net-zero.

The Team

The Own footprint team within the WB COO domain contributes to ING’s global sustainability strategy, which is at the core of what we do and how we do it. Our main purpose is to become net-zero well before 2050. We achieve this by implementing the most effective methodology to assess and improve our core banking operations processes through sustainability, as well as creating a knowledge-sharing platform across the world to ensure we share best practices and learn from each other to accelerate our contribution to planet Earth. Our interns are key players in designing and implementing our Own footprint strategy both locally and globally.

Internship Opportunity: Own Footprint

Currently, there is an opportunity for a six-month internship within our team, supporting the activities of Sustainability in ING’s operations. We focus on applying climate action to our banking operations processes. The team also contributes to ING’s own operational footprint reduction by providing support to all countries the company operates at in reducing their CO2e emissions and accelerating local prioritization and actions. This will in part be done through quarterly reporting, survey collection and collaborating with third parties.

The internship is on a full-time basis, with flexibility to ensure students are meeting ongoing study requirements.

What will your main tasks be?

We are specifically looking for an intern who is excited to support project management and help strengthen the visibility of our Own Footprint team globally — through internal communications, presentations, and community engagement. Ideally, the intern would be working on a thesis in relation to sustainability in businesses.

  • Support in the collection and analysis of environmental footprint data.
  • Analyze data to identify trends and areas for improvement in our CO2 footprint.
  • Engage colleagues to improve our environmental footprint, including through campaigns.
  • Manage and develop the internal COO Own Footprint Intranet community and support other countries in developing their own communities; work closely with communications to share news internally through the community.
  • Provide administrative support to Green Guild meetings (functional domain which consists of country representatives across the globe), various events, meetings, calls, reporting, project coordination activities, and project reporting.

Your profile

  • Master or Bachelor (third-year bachelor) student with strong skills in Data Analysis, and a background in Sustainable Development and/or Communication.
  • Strong interest in project management, internal communications, and global stakeholder engagement.
  • A genuine interest in environmental issues.
  • Strong organizational/project management skills.
  • Problem analysis and judgment.
  • Attention to detail (accuracy).
  • Ability to work in an international environment.
  • High ambition/energy level.
  • Teamwork.
  • Perseverance (flexible hours).
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Fluency in business English is required.

What can you expect?

You can expect a challenge, as we offer you the opportunity to immediately integrate into the Sustainability team. You will participate in research, organizing events, supporting stakeholder relations, communications, and project management. You will operate in a highly dynamic and international working environment. To support your work, you will have the opportunity to attend various internal events and learning opportunities. All these experiences will contribute to strong personal development and leadership.

Rewards and benefits

This is a great opportunity to train with highly skilled people who are experts in their field. You’ll do a lot and learn a lot – not only about your specialist area and the bank, but also about yourself and whether this type of environment is right for you.

You’ll also benefit from:

  • Internship allowance of 700 EUR based on a 36 hours work week.
  • Your own work laptop.
  • Hybrid working to blend home working for focus and office working for collaboration and co-creation.
  • Personal growth and challenging work with endless possibilities.
  • An informal working environment with innovative colleagues.

During the duration of your internship at ING, it is mandatory to be enrolled at a Dutch university (or EU-university for EU passport holders).
