This role is for an Electromechanical Engineer in the Test Facilities and Laboratories Section, TEC Test Facilities and Infrastructure Office, Directorate of Technology, Engineering and Quality (TEC).

The Test Facilities and Laboratories Section manages the facilities of the ESA/ESTEC Test Centre (test facilities and test methods development and modification) and provides expertise on environmental testing. In addition, technological research and development activities in the above engineering fields are also carried out in the Section.

Duties

You will report to the Head of the Test Facilities and Laboratories Section and to the Head of the TEC Test Facilities and Infrastructure Office and will contribute to the efficient management and evolution of the test facilities in the Space Test Centre.

Your main duties will include:

  • Planning, developing and implementing new test facilities to support the evolution of space test requirements.
  • Planning, developing and implementing upgrades to existing facilities to improve performance and productivity.
  • Coordinating and supervising the installation, assembly and acceptance activities conducted in the test facilities.
  • Improving existing test methods and developing new ones with respect to technical performance, productivity, reliability and measurement quality.
  • Assessing existing test facility operations with respect to safety, cost effectiveness and performance, and assessing customer requirements to recommend modifications for upgrading and replacing hardware and/or software.
  • Supervising and supporting the maintenance, calibration and repair activities performed by the Test Centre contractors.
  • Supporting the other sections of the TEC Test Facilities and Infrastructure Office as required.
  • Supporting ESA projects for testing related activities and assessments as required.

Technical competencies

  • Knowledge of environmental testing for space applications
  • Knowledge about mechanical test facilities for space testing (e.g. shaker, acoustic facilities, microvibration measurement facilities, or mass properties measurement facilities)
  • Good experience in maintaining and operating technical infrastructure
  • Hands-on laboratory experience

Education

A master's degree in an engineering discipline in the TEC engineering and testing laboratory domain is required for this post.

Additional requirements

  • Good experience in quality management systems and certification
  • Good experience in SharePoint, Teams and laboratory management IT tools
  • Knowledge of procurement processes and service-based procurement
  • Project management skills and experience

Applicants must be eligible to access information, technology, and hardware which is subject to European or US export control and sanctions regulations and eligible to acquire the security clearance by their national security administrations.

Note that ESA is in the process of transitioning to a Matrix setup, which could lead to organisational changes affecting this position.
