Electromechanical Engineer in the Engineering Services Section, Test Facilities and Infrastructure Office, Directorate of Technology, Engineering and Quality.

The Engineering Services Section provides support in the fields of mechanical engineering and manufacturing, electrical engineering, metrology and instrument calibration. It mainly supports the update and development of test facilities and test instrumentation at the Test Centre, the customers of the Test Centre, the ESTEC laboratories and ESA projects. Technological research and development (R&D) activities in the above engineering fields are also carried out in the Engineering Services Section.

Duties

You will report to the Head of the Engineering Services Section and help to deal with requests in the technical fields described above, and in particular in the fields of mechanical engineering and R&D.

Your main duties will include:

  • Performing design, manufacturing and assembly tasks of electromechanical hardware related to test facilities, test equipment and test instrumentation
  • Performing mechanical simulation in support of the Test Facilities and Laboratories Section
  • Building and maintaining mathematical models of the facilities to perform virtual testing for the preparation of test campaigns
  • Supporting the Test Centre customers for the analysis of complex data resulting from the tests or simulations (e.g. thermal data or dynamic response of mechanical structures)
  • Supporting investment and maintenance activities of the Test Facilities and Infrastructure Office
  • Participating in feasibility studies, project reviews and evaluation of procurement proposals
  • Providing expert technical support and consultancy to ESA projects, and general studies in the field of mechanical testing throughout all project phases
  • Monitoring applicable scientific and technological trends and maintaining state-of-the-art expertise
  • Contributing to the dissemination of the results of the activities performed and the transfer of knowledge across the Agency

Technical competencies

  • Experience with the design, development and application of relevant tools and methods
  • Experience with laboratory or field testing of relevant technical equipment
  • Experience in environmental testing for space hardware
  • Experience in the preparation of procurement activities for technology development and innovation (Statements of Work, proposal evaluation, etc.)
  • Experience in management and monitoring of industrial activities, including participation in reviews

Education

A master's degree or equivalent in mechanical engineering is required for this post.

Additional requirements

Given the nature of the daily activities, candidates are required to have proven work experience and good knowledge of the following:

  • Computer-aided design tools, preferably 3DExperience
  • Simulation tools, preferably Nastran for Finite Element analysis and MATLAB/Simulink for simulation of complex models (e.g. Multiphysics models)
  • Optical simulation tools, such as LightTools
  • LabView for the design of the graphical user interface for acquisition systems

Several years of experience in a design office and a test house would be considered an asset. Previous experience of cooperating with academic institutions and research centres on research activities would be an asset, as would knowledge of space project requirements, i.e. space environment, cleanliness and quality aspects.
