About this internship

How can advanced packaging technologies contribute to revolutionise short‑range data transfers?

Today’s data‑transfer technologies are reaching their limits. To keep up with the growing data volumes in modern systems, future architectures will rely on wireless communication operating at extremely high frequencies, particularly in the 200–300 GHz range. These bands enable ultra‑fast links but also introduce substantial propagation losses, making traditional antenna solutions unsuitable. Advanced packaging technologies address this challenge by integrating antennas and passive components directly within the semiconductor package in a compact, shielded 3D structure. This approach improves signal quality and integration density, and provides higher electrical performance compared to conventional planar designs.

Your goal?

To design and optimise a high‑efficiency antenna array in package for 200–300 GHz, using our in‑house advanced packaging technologies.

Your activities will involve:

  • Doing a literature review.
  • Designing and simulating antenna arrays using software tools such as Matlab or CST/HFSS.
  • Reporting internally and to partners.

Where you’ll work

In the Department of Radar Technology, a passionate and creative group of professionals (60 people) dedicated to the specification, development and evaluation of innovative, high-performance MMICs, miniaturised and integrated RF subsystems, antennas and front-ends. The department is at the heart of novel, game-changing radar system and signal processing concepts for the military, space and civil domains.

What we expect from you

  • You are in the final stages of your degree in electrical engineering or a similar degree and have solid track record in the field of applied electromagnetism and antennas.
  • You have experience in programming in Matlab or/and Pyhton, in the use of Ansys HFSS and/or CST Microwave Studio.
  • You are pragmatic and focused on making things work. Next to technical expertise we value communication skills, team player and a results-driven attitude.

What you'll get in return

TNO values your personal and professional development. You will be properly supervised during your work placement and be given the scope to get the best out of yourself. Furthermore, we provide:

  • A highly professional, innovative internship environment, within a team of top experts.
  • A suitable internship allowance (615 euro for wo-, hbo- and mbo-students, for a full-time internship).
  • Possibility of eight hours of free leave per internship month (for a full-time internship).
  • A free membership of Jong TNO, where you can meet other TNO professionals and join several activities, such as sports activities, (work-related) courses or the yearly ski-trip.
  • Use of a laptop.
  • An allowance for travel expenses in case you don’t receive an OV-card.

Security clearance requirement

For this internship vacancy it is required that the AIVD issues a security clearance (VGB) after conducting a security screening. Take into account that this process may take about 8 weeks. If you have been abroad for more than 6 consecutive months, or if you do not have the Dutch nationality, it may take longer.

Innovation with purpose: that is what TNO stands for. We develop knowledge not for its own sake, but for practical application. TNO connects people and knowledge to create innovations that boost the competitive strength of industry and the well-being of society in a sustainable way.
