Find a job you love on

Our take on success started with 3 students on a job hunt. 5 years later those same students are running a successful online network, having helped over 70,000 students reach all their potential opportunities. How did they get there? Inspired by our own founding Magneteers, here are a few things to remember on your road to success:

1. Hard work

This is probably the most frequently used answer, but nevertheless it shouldn’t be underestimated.

2. Repetition

Although it can be very tedious, repetition is one of the best ways you can improve and really get good at something.

Malcolm Gladwell’s book Outliers says it takes 10,000 hours of practice to achieve mastery level in a certain field.

3. Grit

Encountering difficulties or oppositions can be demotivating, however, what you’ll want to do is persist. Keep going.

J.K. Rowling’s manuscript for the first Harry Potter book got turned down by some 12 publishers before Bloomsbury publishing agreed to publish the first book of the Harry Potter series.

4. Opportunity VS. Obligation

Regardless of if you’re doing a task you dislike, think of the opportunity that comes with it. What success you can reach when you’ve completed this task. Your effort will increase when you see what opportunity you have.

“Think about what you’re thinking about next time your effort is low. If you’re giving 50% or 70%, you’re probably not thinking about the opportunity, you’re thinking about the obligation.” – Eric Thomas (Motivational video)

5. Passion

Another big driver is passion. Find what you’re will to pour everything you have into and work for with blood sweat and tears without immediate recognition.

Samuel Pierpont Langley, who was largely interested of fame and money, was paid 50,000 dollars by the war department to figure out this ‘flying machine’. The Wright brothers had no money, no one on their team had a college degree, but they were all driven by the common goal that if they succeed to create a ‘fly machine’ it would change the course of the world. Have you heard of Samuel Pierpont Langley?

6. The f-word

Stop convincing yourself that you’re fine. You’re telling yourself that you’re okay with not having something you want. Go after what you want and act on your ideas.

The 5 second rule: Your mind can process a facial expression in 33 milliseconds. It can move pretty quick. If you don’t act on your impulse within 5 seconds, you will kill the idea.

7. Self discipline

Remember YOUR goal. The people that don’t have goals work for people that do.

Achieving your goal can be difficult, especially when you have to change your routine and break your habits to get there. Keep working at it. Check out these extra tips on gaining self discipline.

8. Inspiration

Keep your inspiration in mind. If you’re struggling, go back to the inspiration to remind yourself why you’re working towards this in the first place.

Motivation can come from anywhere: pictures, videos, people, places, sports, moments, to name a few. Pick one, pick two, pick them all.

9. Fail

Failure is the key to success. Success is the ability to learn. It is the ability to get back up after failing and trying again. It’s a trial and error process. Nobody gets it right in one go.
