What makes a job in consultancy so challenging? And what’s it like to be a junior consultant at cpmview? In this interview, Kevin Berkhout shares his journey in the corporate world, the unique company culture at cpmview, and his candid advice for students and recent grads.
How Kevin landed his junior consultant role at cpmview
Kevin studied Business Administration at the University of Amsterdam and went on to complete a master’s in Business Administration with a focus on Strategy. Despite his broad academic background, he didn’t have a clear career path right after graduation. "I knew I wanted to do something in the corporate sector, but I didn’t have a specific plan."
After applying to several consultancy roles and hearing he lacked experience, Kevin came across cpmview on Magnet.me. "From the first interview, I felt a connection. It was different from other interviews because cpmview wasn’t just looking at my experience—they were genuinely interested in me as a person."
“In job interviews, you often feel like you have to sell yourself. But at cpmview, I felt like they genuinely wanted me on board.”
The hiring process was straightforward: an initial meeting with the talent development manager, followed by a second round where the company gave him a deep dive into trends and developments in corporate performance management. There was also a coffee chat with a junior consultant. "It gave me a good feel for the work and the team culture."
Later that day, while driving home, he got a call from HR. "They were really positive and wanted to offer me a contract." For Kevin, it was a refreshing experience. "In interviews, you often feel like you have to sell yourself. But at cpmview, I felt like they genuinely wanted me on board. It wasn’t a one-way street."
What makes cpmview’s company culture so special
When asked about the best part of his job at cpmview, Kevin mentions the company culture right away. "People Matter is a core value at cpmview. You’re valued as an individual, and everyone is ready to help you out and make time for you."
Even outside of work, team-building is a big focus. "There are plenty of activities, like ski trips, city breaks, sporting events, and dinners. It really makes the work environment feel close-knit."
In addition to the great atmosphere, Kevin values the variety of projects and clients. "You get to work with companies of all sizes, from big multinationals to smaller organizations. You’re exposed to different work and company cultures, which helps you grow personally and professionally."
Learning by doing: Kevin’s growth as a consultant
Kevin got his hands dirty early on at cpmview. "In my second week, I was already visiting a client. It was a bit intimidating, but also a huge learning opportunity. I’ve learned that the best way to get good at your job is to jump in and do it."
But cpmview doesn’t just throw you into the deep end—they offer plenty of training and support. From financial courses to workshops on software tools and presentation skills, there’s a lot on offer. After and during projects, feedback sessions are held. "This helps you get valuable client feedback and adjust your approach accordingly."
To support your development, cpmview also assigns a talent development manager to guide you. "Every quarter, you sit down to talk about your personal and professional growth. You can shape these conversations however you like. Everything’s open for discussion."
Achievements and personal growth
Kevin has already achieved some significant milestones at cpmview. "I’ve worked on implementing new processes for financial and tax regulations, which helps clients manage and validate their data more effectively. I’ve made a real impact—and that feels rewarding."
He’s also improved his presentation skills. "Public speaking was never my strong suit, but through training and presenting to clients, I’ve made huge strides. Cpmview has really supported me and given me the space to grow."
What’s next for Kevin at cpmview?
Kevin is excited about his future at cpmview. "I’d love to dive deeper into financial and tax processes so I can better translate client needs into technical solutions. Ultimately, I hope to grow into a senior consultant role. I’d love to mentor junior colleagues along the way, because I know firsthand how valuable that kind of guidance is."
Kevin’s advice for students and recent grads
Kevin has some solid advice for students and recent grads: "I was pretty insecure when I graduated, and I still feel that way sometimes. But what I’ve learned is that you shouldn’t be afraid to make the wrong decision. Every experience helps you grow and develop."
While in college, Kevin never imagined he’d land this consultancy role. "Your job is important, but the environment you work in might be even more important. It really shapes your job satisfaction. Find a place where you can be yourself and where you feel supported.”
