Few places in The Netherlands capture the imagination like the Zuidas in Amsterdam. This vibrant hotspot in the Dutch capital is the nerve center of dozens of prestigious law firms. We sat down with Bouke Algie, who works as a Junior Associate at the international law firm Simmons & Simmons, to ask him about his career.

From pharmaceutical sciences to a career in law

Bouke Algie is a man with broad interests. He studied Pharmaceutical Sciences and Law at Leiden University, and combined his passion for technology and law during internships and a working student position at various intellectual property firms.

He eventually specialized in patent law, a decision he made deliberately. “I am interested in technology, the medical field, and law, so this was the best choice for me,” says Bouke. “What I find most compelling about patent law is the chance to translate complex technical issues into clear legal arguments. It’s fascinating to merge these two worlds.”

Why Bouke chose Simmons & Simmons

Before becoming a Junior Associate in patent law, Bouke worked as a student intern at Simmons & Simmons and later as a working student. One of the things that convinced him to stay at the law firm is the focus on inclusivity. "Simmons & Simmons is a dynamic environment where your voice is heard, and everyone is open to different opinions and new insights. I haven't just made colleagues here, but also friends."

The international scope of the work is another benefit for Bouke. “Working with colleagues from diverse cultures and fields is truly enriching. It makes every project unique because you not only get to know international colleagues, but you also gain new legal perspectives. It's also a great challenge to combine knowledge from different jurisdictions for our clients.”

A job where no two days are the same

As a Junior Associate in the patent law team, which is part of the Dispute Resolution practice group, Bouke's workday involves a variety of tasks. He alternates between drafting legal documents and analyzing complex technical documentation. “What I enjoy most is translating technical concepts into legal arguments. That’s what makes my job truly challenging.”

Focus on professional and personal development

Simmons & Simmons offers a lot of support to junior associates, both professionally and personally. For a few months now, Bouke has been attending the Law Firm School (LFS) to further develop his skills. “I appreciate that at Simmons & Simmons, you can easily approach your colleagues for brainstorming and questions. There’s a strong emphasis on both professional and personal growth.”

Bouke’s advice for young talent entering the job market

Would you like to work as a Junior Associate for an international law firm?
