How do you make our customers happy?

By delivering and optimizing strong short- and long-term logistical network plans. These plans should be built up with accurate and reliable data for our stakeholders to ensure an optimal plan that meets customer demand with logistical capacity.

As a Data Scientist in team Network Planning, you will be responsible for discovering better optimizations that help us get the most out of our logistical landscape. A complex puzzle to make together with fellow Data Scientists, Software Engineers and stakeholders. Ultimately, your involvement and technical skills will determine the accuracy and usefulness of the network plans, thereby directly contributing to key organizational goals.

The biggest challenge

We need to ensure that your logistical network can meet the ambitions of our retail organization and partners. With rapidly growing order volumes and increasing complexity in our logistics landscape, designing and implementing smart algorithms is the next logical step. How can we use our logistical resources efficiently? How can we ensure stock is always in the right place? And how can we fulfill diverse customer orders in the best possible way? These are the questions our data scientists tackle every day.

What we are looking for

We are on the outlook for a Data Scientist who gets excited in analysing and building data solutions together with the team. Our new colleague should have the tendency to grasp key challenges quickly and can identify essential insights in a short manner. Besides diving into analyses, we are on the outlook for someone that likes to lead complex business challenges from ideas into real solutions for our end users. As this team is delivering direct impact to one of the major organizational goals for 2026, a pragmatic attitude towards solutions and their feasibility is important. Also, we prefer someone with a strong focus on collaboration and to play a supporting role in growing and improving our domain.

Overview of hard skills

To be successful as a Data Scientist in our team, you need to have:

  • +/- 5 years of Data Science experience or another relevant working field
  • Strong experience in Python
  • Familiar with Operations Research methods
  • Sufficient in working with Google Cloud, Big Query, Cloud SQL
  • Bonus points are awarded for Data Engineering experience (ETL and Airflow)

Reasons why this is for you

  • You really like solving complex optimization puzzles – you know how to find your optimal way through Operations Research
  • Analytical and pragmatic thinker – you enjoy building new optimization models, as well as rolling up your sleeves to dive into the code
  • Impact maker – you thrive on turning ideas into production-ready solutions ready to be shipped to our users

Reasons why this would not be for you

  • Complexity allergic – you are uncomfortable with complexity and ambiguity
  • Stakeholder avoider – you are not interested in engaging with stakeholders
  • Theory-only thinker – you have a lack of interest in applied problem solving

Where you will work

The Network Planning team is responsible for creating optimal logistical network plans for our warehouses by trading off customer demand against available capacity, costs and distribution. The team consists of three software engineers and three data scientists that together define accurate network plans that stakeholders use for different purposes, such as allocating stock to our warehouses. The team is a fairly new team that drives new optimizations through data science models and solid software engineering solutions. The Network Planning team is part of Capacity Steering, a domain within Core Logistics II area within Bol.

Bij bol leveren onze collega’s een unieke bijdrage om het dagelijks leven makkelijker te maken.
