This internship assignment is within GKN Aerospace (Fokker Elmo Engineering), focused on the Electrical Wiring Interconnection System (EWIS) core business and specifically the EWIS Components & Environmental testing (ECE) discipline.
EWIS Components & Environmental testing (ECE)
ECE is mainly responsible for (standard) parts, materials and constructions definition, selection and qualification (testing). This is critical for EWIS configurations in demanding environments such as engines and landing gears.
The term EWIS covers all wiring harnesses (bundles) in a typical aircraft, which perform the function of power and data transportation between electrical equipment (from the generation of electrical power up to the individual electrical equipment of the different aircraft systems).
Challenge for the applicant
Subject: Engine wire harness endpoint mechanical stress characterization
GKN Fokker Elmo is a large player in engine wire harness qualification activities. One of the challenges is to move from engineering judgement driven decision-making to data driven decision-making to reduce the test sample quantity required to qualify a new product. This will reduce the overall lead-time and cost of the product design process.
GKN Fokker Elmo is looking for a characterization of mechanical stress acting on a wire harness endpoint when it is being subjected to (engine) vibration levels while considering different boundaries. This is to enable better analysis and rationale on which configurations have to be qualified by testing and which configurations can be qualified by analysis.
