As a Software Engineer API Ecosystem, you’ll develop an API registry and tooling to ensure our APIs aren't just technically sound, but also easily discoverable, usable, and reliable.

How do you make our customers happy?

By building the API infrastructure that enables 120+ product teams to collaborate pleasantly on a wide range of customer-facing products. As a Software Engineer API Ecosystem, you’ll develop an API registry and tooling to ensure our APIs aren’t just technically sound, but also easily discoverable, usable, and reliable. The result? Faster delivery, fewer integration headaches, and a platform that truly scales. Can you build tomorrow’s API highways? Elevate the end-user experience!

The biggest challenge

Getting the entire organization to shift to API design-first thinking while building the technical infrastructure. You’ll need to strike the right balance between governance and developer freedom – too strict and teams might disengage, whereas too loose invites ‘API anarchy’. Success demands equal measures of technical excellence and cultural insight. How do you create standards that don’t feel like red tape? And how do you ensure teams eagerly adopt new ways of working?

What you'll do as a Software Engineer – API Ecosystem

You’ll be part of the team that shapes bol’s API strategy. Together with fellow engineers, you’ll build the future of our API infrastructure. You’ll collaborate closely with teams across the organization to drive API design-first adoption. You’ll implement and maintain the API registry, using Apigee’s API Hub in GCP, ensuring APIs are correctly published, searchable, and accessible. You’ll design and continually evolve tooling and automation that accelerate API development and reduce friction, while actively contributing to the developer portal to unify the experience and minimize duplicate or fragmented tools.

Through linting, guidelines, and quality checks, you’ll keep APIs consistent across the company. Additionally, you’ll leverage your change management talent to help teams adopt new ways of working. E.g., through proactive notifications and monitoring to prevent API consumers from breaking changes. Most importantly, you’ll act as an enabling partner of engineering teams, fostering the knowledge, practices, and tooling that establish API design-first as the standard way of working. Summing up:

  • Build and maintain the API registry (Apigee API Hub/GCP)
  • Create developer tooling and automation
  • Evolve the unified developer portal
  • Implement API quality gates and standards
  • Enable proactive change management
  • Partner with teams on API design-first adoption

Why you can make a difference

You combine deep API design expertise with a drive to improve the developer experience. With extensive experience in REST (OpenAPI) and PubSub (AsyncAPI), you know what distinguishes superb APIs from merely good ones. Your cloud platform knowledge (GCP is particularly welcome) and experience with API management platforms will help you make an impact quickly. You are technically strong and especially excel at translating governance into enablement. You understand that standards should help developers, not hinder them. With your ability to build bridges between teams and make technical complexity understandable, you’ll help transform an entire organization.

3 reasons why this is (not) for you

Pros

  • API pioneer You're excited by the idea of setting the API standard for a lot of developers
  • Cloud native You feel perfectly at home in cloud environments
  • Governance guru You don’t view standards as restrictions but as a highway to better software

Cons

  • Performance anxiety You'd rather develop solutions for a single team instead of 120+
  • Documentation dispensation You are tragically bad at writing and updating documentation
  • Main-road traveler You prefer following existing processes to creating new paths

Where you'll work

At a retail tech platform serving 13.7 million customers and 47,000 partners, where you’ll work on systems that truly scale. We give you space to experiment, learn, and shape the API strategy of a retail tech leader. The culture? Technically driven, impact-oriented, and with a healthy dose of pragmatism. Ready to build the API architecture that 120+ teams can build on? Welcome aboard!
