System Engineer Middleware

By ensuring the flawless integration of our digital commercial endeavors and physical operations. As a System Engineer of Team Middleware, you’ll design, promote, and implement scalable solutions for complex warehouse automation systems that process up to 800 orders per minute across 5 fulfillment centers. Ultimately, your technical leadership will determine our ability to meet delivery promises to 13.5 million customers and accelerate the innovation of our warehouse operations.

The biggest challenge

Balancing technical excellence with strategic leadership in a complex domain. You’ll need to bridge warehouse hardware controls to the Warehouse Management Systems (WMS) and guide a team of six system engineers. Success means maintaining 24/7 operational reliability while driving continuous architectural improvements and enabling team members to excel. That often calls for bold technical decisions that scale across our warehouse network in a stakeholder-intensive setting.

What you'll do as a System Engineer Warehouse Middleware

Reporting to the Engineering Manager and six other team members of Technical Warehouse Foundation (TWF), you’ll work with the Warehouse Middleware team in designing and implementing effective middleware services. You’ll drive continuous improvement of our middleware platform, which forms the critical link between our warehouse hardware controls and WMS. Working from Utrecht (HQ) and Waalwijk (warehouses),

• Design scalable solutions leveraging Linux, Python, and cloud technologies, Windows is a pre
• Implement monitoring and automation with Grafana, Prometheus, and Puppet

• Drive infrastructure-as-code practices using GitLab and Rundeck
• Participate in on-call rotation (one week out of every seven)

Your technical foundation includes Linux/Windows systems administration, Python, Bash, PowerShell scripting, and infrastructure automation with Puppet. We also expect you to deploy monitoring solutions (Grafana, Prometheus), navigate the Google Cloud Platform, and be familiar with GitLab/Rundeck and CI/CD practices. As a flexible jack-of-all-trades, you don’t need to master every aspect, but you should be able to adapt to diverse technical challenges while maintaining a confident overview.

Where you'll work

You’ll will be part of Team Middleware within Technical Warehouse Foundation, where software meets the physical world of warehouse operations. The role combines hands-on technical work with operational tasks and be part of a stand by service (24/7) splitting time between our Utrecht office (two days) and Waalwijk fulfillment centers.
