Help validate a new coupled model for wind, waves and ocean conditions in the WHAM research project. You will work with measurement and model data that support real offshore wind decisions. The preferred start date is as soon as possible, and the internship lasts at least four months.
Internship in offshore wind and MetOcean model validation
- Arnhem
- 600 - 750
What you will do as an intern
WHAM is a Dutch subsidy project involving Haskoning, Whiffle and Deltares. It combines Whiffle's ASPIRE atmospheric model with the SWAN wave model and Delft3D hydrodynamic model to improve information for offshore wind design, energy yield assessments, construction and operations.
Within the project, Haskoning represents the end user perspective and validates model results against offshore measurements. You will contribute to this scope with guidance from Haskoning specialists and cooperation with the project partners. Your work will include:
- Select, assess and prepare offshore wind and MetOcean measurement datasets
- Develop or improve Python workflows for quality control, model validation and visualisation
- Compare model output with observations of wind, waves, currents and water levels
- Assess performance across normal, extreme and operationally relevant conditions
- Summarise the results and their practical value for offshore wind projects
Where you will work
At Haskoning, you will join an independent, employee owned international consultancy that combines engineering, design, and consultancy services with software and technology.
As our new intern, you will join Haskoning's Renewable Energy team in the Netherlands. You will work with consultants and technical specialists in wind resource assessment, MetOcean studies, offshore measurements and project development. The position offers a hybrid working arrangement, with regular contact with your Haskoning supervisor and the WHAM project partners.
What you bring
You enjoy turning complex datasets into clear conclusions and can work independently while asking for input when needed. You communicate your methods and results clearly and take a careful, structured approach to technical analysis.
- You are enrolled in an MSc programme in wind energy, meteorology, oceanography, civil engineering, applied physics, data science or a related field
- You have experience with Python for data analysis and visualisation
- You can communicate professionally in English, both in writing and in conversation
- You are available for at least four months and can start as soon as possible
