Introduction

The Motion Control department in Veldhoven develops software platforms that support advanced control systems used throughout ASML's lithography machines. These systems help achieve nanometer-level precision and reliable machine performance. In this Computer Science | Artificial Intelligence internship: ai-assisted scheduler development, you will explore how AI-assisted software engineering can support the development of complex software solutions. By combining software architecture analysis, artificial intelligence, and Python development, you will contribute to an innovative prototype with potential future applications within ASML.

  • Location: Veldhoven, Netherlands
  • Team: Interns and Trainees
  • Work experience: 0-1 year
  • Educational background: Computer Science, Other technical backgrounds
  • Travel: No
  • Programming languages: C++, C, Java, Python
  • Workplace type: Hybrid
  • Fulltime/parttime: Full time

Your assignment

During this internship, you will investigate how AI-supported development methods can be used to analyze existing software and accelerate prototype creation. You will use AI-supported development tools to extract architectural and design rules from the documentation and codebase and consolidate them into persistent, reusable artifacts. These artifacts should describe the scheduler's behavior, responsibilities, interfaces, configuration rules, and hidden assumptions. They will subsequently serve as context for implementing a functional Python-based prototype scheduler.

Your main responsibilities will be:

  • Analyze existing software architecture and technical documentation.
  • Extract design rules and software requirements using AI-assisted development tools.
  • Develop a Python-based scheduler prototype.
  • Document software behavior, interfaces, and configuration requirements.
  • Validate the prototype in a development or testing environment.
  • Evaluate the opportunities and limitations of AI-assisted software development.
  • Present findings and recommendations to stakeholders.

This is a bachelor or master internship for minimum 6 months, 5 days per week (2-3 days on-site). The start date of this internship is as of February 2027.

Your profile

To be suitable for the internship, you:

  • Are pursuing a bachelor's or master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Embedded Systems, Artificial Intelligence, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Have experience with Python programming.
  • Have an interest in artificial intelligence, software engineering, and embedded systems.
  • Are analytical, proactive, and comfortable solving complex technical problems.
  • Can communicate technical findings clearly and work effectively with different stakeholders.

The internship offers an opportunity to gain hands-on experience with AI-assisted software engineering in a highly innovative environment. Through this internship you will develop valuable technical skills while contributing to real engineering challenges.

Other requirements you need to meet:

  • You are enrolled at an educational institute for the entire duration of the internship, and you are at least 18 years old at the start of the internship;
  • If you are a non-EU citizen, studying in the Netherlands, your university is willing to sign the documents relevant for doing an internship (i.e., Nuffic agreement);
  • You need to be located in the Netherlands to be perform your internship. In case you are currently living/studying outside of the Netherlands, your application shows the willingness to relocate.

This position requires access to controlled technology, as defined in the United States Export Administration Regulations (15 C.F.R. § 730, et seq.). Qualified candidates must be legally authorized to access such controlled technology prior to beginning work. Business demands may require ASML to proceed with candidates who are immediately eligible to access controlled technology.

We're moving technology forward
In fact, we’re probably a part of the electronic device you’re using right now. Our lithography technology is fundamental to mass producing semiconductor chips. With it, the world’s top chipmakers are creating microchips that are more powerful, faster and energy efficient.
