We are looking for a Senior Java Developer (Back-End) to join our FX IT DevOps team. You will help build, maintain, and improve software that has a direct and demonstrable impact on the Foreign Exchange business.

This is a senior, hands-on engineering role for someone who understands the demands of Financial Markets technology and is comfortable taking end-to-end ownership. You will work closely with FX business stakeholders and other engineers to refine requirements, design solutions, write and review code, test changes, and operate applications in production.

Just as importantly, you will help the current team grow. You will coach colleagues, encourage sound engineering decisions, raise development standards, and create an environment in which people collaborate, learn, and take responsibility.

Your job

What you will do

• Design, develop, test, and maintain enterprise-scale Java applications supporting FX trading.
• Translate complex business and trading requirements into reliable, implementable technical solutions.
• Develop multithreaded, low-latency software using modern Java and established coding practices.
• Work with trading concepts and systems covering areas such as pricing, risk management, and trade execution.
• Take ownership of applications throughout their lifecycle, from solution design and implementation to release, monitoring, support, and continuous improvement.
• Maintain high standards for reliability, stability, code quality, observability, and production readiness.
• Proactively identify operational risks and improvements rather than waiting for incidents to occur.
• Investigate and resolve complex incidents by connecting information across applications, services, tools, and initiatives.
• Review code and promote engineering best practices across the team.
• Coach less-experienced developers and help them grow in technical capability, confidence, and ownership.
• Constructively challenge technical decisions and stakeholder expectations when this will lead to a better outcome.
• Strengthen collaboration between technology teams and Financial Markets stakeholders.

Working environment

You will work in a collaborative and international DevOps team within ABN AMRO's Financial Markets division. The role offers a mix of software engineering and business interaction, with direct impact on Foreign Exchange (FX) trading applications. The environment is technically challenging, fast-paced, and focused on teamwork, knowledge sharing, continuous learning, and end-to-end ownership. Hybrid working applies, with approximately three days per week in the office.

Your profile

Essential experience

• Strong professional experience developing enterprise software in Java 17 or later.
• Senior-level experience with Spring Boot and the Spring Framework.
• Experience building scalable, multithreaded, low-latency applications.
• Knowledge of Financial Markets and trading systems.
• Understanding of pricing, risk management, and trade-execution processes.
• Experience translating business requirements into practical technical solutions.

Education

An advanced degree in a relevant field, such as Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics, or a comparable discipline, or equivalent professional experience.

Desirable experience

• Detailed knowledge of Foreign Exchange trading.
• Strong experience with the FIX protocol and its use with trading platforms.
• Experience with the Microsoft Azure cloud platform.
• An affinity for quantitative engineering and solving complex financial or computational problems.
• Proficient in using GitHub Copilot or similar AI-powered coding assistants to support software development and problem-solving.
• Experience translating business requirements into practical technical solutions.
• A track record of maintaining code quality through reviews, testing, and engineering best practices.
• Experience working in a DevOps environment, including production support, incident resolution, monitoring, releases, and continuous improvement.
