The Department of Software Technology is looking for collaborative and forward-thinking Assistant Professors to join our department and contribute to our mission. We currently have four (4) vacancies for Assistant Professors. We are specifically looking for Assistant Professors in Algorithmics, Data-Intensive Systems, Embedded Systems, Networked Systems, and Software Engineering. Candidates who have a profile that aligns with any of the other research groups of Software Technology are also encouraged to apply.

The Department of Software Technology is home to a diverse team of 250 researchers, educators and support staff. We focus on the design, engineering and analysis of complex, distributed and data-intensive software and computing systems. With active research in areas such as Artificial Intelligence and the Internet of Things, the department is at the forefront of shaping and strengthening our digital society.

In this position, you will join one of the research groups working in the areas of Algorithms, Artificial Intelligence, Computer Networks, Embedded Systems, Information Retrieval, Networked Systems, Programming Languages, Software Engineering, and Quantum Computer Science. You will have the space to lead and develop your research in an area that aligns with the existing research lines of the department. You will bring a complementary viewpoint, expertise and experience, and be supported in building your group with a start-up package comprising one PhD student. Within the supportive environment of an established department and the TU Delft Academic Career Track, you will be empowered to further advance your research, build your team, and acquire additional funding.

Together with our sister department Intelligent Systems, we are the Computer Science cluster in the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science. Part of your responsibility is to teach and inspire the next generation of students in our BSc and MSc Computer Science programmes. As part of your educational responsibilities, you will teach courses and supervise students for their end projects at the BSc and MSc level. Your work will help design the digital infrastructure of the future, it will help define and understand the impact computer science and artificial intelligence have on individuals, organisations, and society as a whole.

Job requirements

  • You hold a PhD in Computer Science or a closely related discipline.
  • You demonstrate research excellence through publications in leading venues in your research area.
  • You have an open mindset with experience in designing, implementing, and evaluating software systems, constructing theories, and/or evaluating human and socio-technical aspects of technology.
  • You are motivated to teach core computer science courses and support the growth of our BSc and MSc students.
  • You like to work with PhD students and train them to become the next generation of top researchers.
  • You have the vision and initiative to secure external research funding (e.g., NWO, ERC, Horizon Europe, etc.) and to develop a sustainable, impactful research group.
  • You communicate clearly in English and actively contribute to a diverse, inclusive, and supportive academic community.
  • We also welcome applicants for the level of Associate Professor. For this position you demonstrate an established independent research profile, successful funding acquisition, supervision and teaching experience, and academic leadership.

Conditions of employment

This position is offered as an Academic Career Track position (0.8 – 1.0 FTE). During the Academic Career Track, we expect you to grow towards an Associate Professor position within a maximum of eight years, for which a position will be available. With other Academic Career Track colleagues, you will participate in the Academic Career Track Development programme, where you are offered ample opportunities to develop yourself in the areas of Education, Research, Societal Impact & Innovation, and Leadership & Organisation. You will regularly discuss your development and results with senior staff based on a personalized development plan and performance criteria agreed upon at the start of your Academic Career Track.

You will start with a temporary contract that will be converted to a permanent contract no later than 12 -18 months after a positive evaluation, based on continuous confidence in your development potential and fit in the organisation.

Inspiring, excellent education is our central aim. We expect you to obtain a University Teaching Qualification (UTQ) within three years if you have less than five years of teaching experience. This is provided by the TU Delft UTQ programme as part of the Academic Career Track Development programme.

TU Delft sets high standards for the English competency of the teaching staff. The TU Delft offers training to improve English competency. If you do not speak Dutch, we offer courses to learn the Dutch language within three years.

Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities. Flexible work schedules can be arranged and you can work partly from home.
