FPGA Engineer - Embedded software
Enschede Engineering Medior
Would you like to combine FPGA technology with embedded software and work on systems where speed, reliability, and smart integration make the difference? Then this could be your next career step at Demcon in Enschede.
At Demcon, we develop technology that makes a difference today and tomorrow. We create technically complex high-tech, medical, and industrial systems in which software, electronics, mechanics, and FPGA technology come together. Think of systems featuring sensors, actuators, data acquisition, motion control, and reliable embedded control. FPGA technology increasingly plays an important role in enabling high-speed, deterministic, or data-intensive functions.
You will work in multidisciplinary teams to develop solutions that are robust, verifiable, and manufacturable.
About Demcon
Demcon develops and manufactures advanced technology and complex systems, from concept through to series production. Driven by the ambition to solve societal and technological challenges, we combine deep engineering expertise with creativity to create solutions that make a real impact. We build prototypes, industrialize innovations, and bring products into production, with a strong focus on mechatronics. By integrating mechanical, electrical, and software engineering with disciplines such as robotics, optics, and data science, we support our customers throughout the entire product lifecycle. The Demcon Group consists of more than 50 specialized companies, together forming a one-stop shop for high-tech innovation. With over 1,100 colleagues worldwide, we are building the technology of tomorrow.
What are you going to do?
As an FPGA Engineer with a focus on embedded software design, you design, implement, and test FPGA solutions that closely interact with software running on embedded platforms. While the primary focus is FPGA development, you also take on software engineering tasks related to system integration, control, and verification. You contribute to the overall system architecture, translate functional requirements into clear FPGA and software architectures, and ensure that your designs work reliably with drivers, interfaces, algorithms, application software, and test software. In addition, you are involved in embedded software development, requirements analysis, design documentation, integration, debugging, and verification on platforms such as Linux, Windows, and ARM- or Intel-based processors. Where required, you develop low-level software, drivers, or test software in languages such as C, C++, or Python.
You will have significant freedom to shape your work and further deepen your expertise in both FPGA technology and embedded software. You will work with modern development and verification tools such as Vivado, Vitis, ModelSim, MATLAB HDL Coder, and Python-based test benches using cocotb. Depending on the project, you may also gain experience with Vitis HLS, AI implementations on FPGA platforms, and CI/CD workflows using GitLab and Docker. Through our FPGA competence group, you will share knowledge with colleagues and contribute to the continued growth and development of FPGA expertise within Demcon.
What do you bring to the table?
- A completed Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Embedded Systems, or a related field;
- At least 3 years of relevant professional experience, with a significant focus on FPGA development;
- Experience with FPGA development, for example using VHDL/Verilog and Xilinx platforms, or demonstrable in-depth expertise in this area;
- Experience with, or a strong affinity for, technical software development in C, C++, C#, Python, or similar programming languages;
- Experience with hardware/software integration, debugging, and test automation is considered a plus;
- Affinity with embedded platforms such as Linux, Windows, and ARM- or Intel-based processors;
- Strong analytical and abstract thinking skills, combined with the curiosity to unravel complex technical challenges;
- A sense of ownership, a hands-on mindset, and the drive to deliver working solutions;
- Enjoyment of teamwork and the motivation to act as the connecting link between software, FPGA technology, electronics, and systems engineering.
