Freelance / Interim | Hybrid — Netherlands, Amsterdam | Initial 3-6-month contract, scope to extend
Our client is the technology organisation of a major European retailer, currently working through significant operating model change across several of its engineering and product teams. Riverflex is supporting two directors inside that organisation, and we are looking for an independent consultant for the Interim Consultant - Technology Transformation role to join our team on the engagement.
You work as a right hand to our lead consultant: turning direction into finished material, running the analysis behind organisational decisions, and taking discrete questions from a standing start to a recommendation. It is a hands-on delivery seat with real visibility — you sit close to director-level decision-making in a large technology function, and you will be trusted to run pieces of work independently.
We work almost entirely through a network of independent consultants across Europe. This role is a freelance engagement, contracted through Riverflex.
Responsibilities
Content and storytelling
- Take a direction or a rough storyline and build it into finished, persuasive material for director-level audiences
- Own the quality of what goes in front of senior stakeholders - structure, narrative, and craft
Analysis and diligence
- Run the analysis behind organisational change decisions, including team-level mapping of how people and responsibilities move between organisations
- Bring structure to questions that arrive undefined, and form a clear point of view from the evidence
Independent workstreams
- Pick up discrete workstreams end to end: work out the approach, identify who needs to be involved, and drive them to a conclusion
- Gather input from engineering leadership and senior engineers on technology strategy topics, including the use of AI across the software development lifecycle
Stakeholders
- Work day to day with our lead consultant on the engagement
- Engage directly with the management teams of two technology directors, and with engineering teams as the work requires
Job requirements
- Around 5–8 years of experience in management consulting, or in an in-house transformation or chief-of-staff function
- Hands-on experience implementing operating model or organisational change - not only designing it
- Exceptional storytelling and material craft, and a genuine willingness to build the work yourself rather than direct others to do it
- Strong structured analysis: you can take an ambiguous problem, break it down, get to the evidence, and form a view
- Enough technology grounding to be credible with engineering managers and senior engineers, and to follow a technical conversation without it being simplified for you
- Self-directed. You are given the destination and the guardrails, not a task list
- Available to start at short notice, operating as an independent contractor
- Fluent English, and the right to work in the EU
The following are a plus:
- Training from a large consultancy or professional services firm
- Retail, e-commerce, or consumer sector experience
- Dutch language skills
- Prior experience in a chief-of-staff or programme support role at director level
Why this role
You get a close-up view of how a large technology organisation actually restructures itself, working directly with two directors and their leadership teams. The work is varied — organisational analysis one week, technology strategy input the next — and you own your workstreams rather than sitting in a delivery queue. It suits an independent consultant who wants substantive, hands-on work with senior exposure and a short mobilisation.
