Freelance Senior AI Engineer

My client is seeking an experienced Senior AI Engineer to lead the design and development of advanced AI solutions for the legal sector on a freelance basis. You’ll help build intelligent platforms capable of understanding, searching, and analysing large volumes of legal documents, contracts, case files, and regulatory content.

Working closely with legal experts, product teams, and engineering stakeholders, you’ll develop scalable AI systems leveraging modern LLMs, Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), semantic search, and agentic workflows to improve legal research, document analysis, and knowledge discovery.

Remote-first role with occasional on-site work in the Netherlands.

Key Responsibilities

AI Engineering & Intelligent Search

• Design, develop, and optimise enterprise-scale AI applications for legal document understanding.
• Build advanced semantic, hybrid, and vector search capabilities across structured and unstructured legal data.
• Develop scalable Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) pipelines using modern LLM frameworks.
• Implement intelligent agent workflows using LangGraph or similar orchestration frameworks.
• Optimise embeddings, ranking strategies, chunking techniques, and retrieval performance.
• Evaluate and integrate new foundation models and AI technologies into production environments.
• Ensure AI solutions meet security, privacy, and compliance requirements expected within regulated industries.

Required Skills & Experience

• Extensive commercial experience developing AI applications using Python (preferred) and/or TypeScript.
• Proven experience building production-grade AI, search, or knowledge retrieval platforms.
• Strong understanding of Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG).
• Strong understanding of Large Language Models (LLMs).
• Strong understanding of vector databases and embedding pipelines, including Elasticsearch, Hybrid Search, Vespa, and LangGraph (or similar orchestration frameworks).
• Experience with Azure services such as Azure AI Search, Azure Machine Learning, Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS), Azure Functions, and Azure Storage.
• Experience deploying AI services using Docker, Kubernetes, and modern CI/CD pipelines.
• Experience working directly with customers or business stakeholders.
• Fluent Dutch (Required).
• Professional English (Required).

Desirable Skills

• Experience building AI-powered web applications using React.
• Experience with FastAPI or similar backend frameworks.
• Familiarity with legal technology, document management systems, or regulatory environments.
• Experience working with multi-agent AI systems and autonomous workflows.
