Become an intern at TNO and contribute to the next generation of materials for PEM electrolysis.
About this position
The transition to a sustainable energy system requires large-scale production of green hydrogen. Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) electrolysis is one of the most promising technologies for converting renewable electricity into hydrogen, offering high efficiency, fast dynamic response and compact system design. However, further improvements in performance, reduced use of critical materials and cost reduction are needed to enable broad application. At TNO, we develop innovative materials and processes that accelerate the implementation of green hydrogen technologies. To support this work, we are looking for an enthusiastic MSc student who wants to contribute to the next generation of materials for PEM electrolysis.
What will be your role?
During this internship, you will explore improvements in the materials required for PEM electrolysis. The work focuses on the assembly, characterization and performance evaluation of membrane-electrode assemblies (MEAs), with an emphasis on physical chemistry. You will combine experimental laboratory work with literature research to develop new insights into material preparation and behavior under PEM electrolysis conditions. The internship offers room to independently define experimental approaches and interpret results, making it an excellent opportunity to further develop self-steering research skills.
The internship lasts at least 5 months. A longer period is possible if desired by the candidate or required by the university. Depending on university requirements, the project may be combined with an MSc graduation assignment.
The assignment will mainly take place in Eindhoven; rare visits to the electrolysis test center in Petten may be possible.
What we expect from you
What you'll get in return
An internship at TNO means working in an environment where substance and impact are central. You will become part of a knowledge organisation where research and practice come together, and where experts collaborate on solutions to current societal and technological challenges.
Your internship is a period in which you can discover what suits you, where your strengths lie and what you would like to learn next. You are part of a professional working environment, gain insight into how things work in practice, and have the opportunity to build experience that goes beyond this internship alone. For many students, an internship is therefore also a first step in discovering whether TNO could be a potential next step after graduation.
In addition, we offer you:
